877. How to Learn Vocabulary | A Conversation with Clare Whitmell

Published 2024-04-11
This conversation is a preview of my Zoom workshop on Thurs 18 April 2024 at 10AM (UK time), as part of the Advanced English Summit. In my workshop I will be talking about how to really learn vocabulary, and not just stare at word lists.
This is a conversation about the subject of the workshop, and summit organiser Clare Whitmell asks me questions about why vocabulary is important, why I love teaching it, common mistakes made by learners, ways of learning vocabulary more effectively, and some tools you can use.

not only the most famous podcast but also the best
  • Times changed a lot since I started studying english. Here were my options in late sixties of last century in order of my personal choise and use: Reading english books ( at the beginning in abridged versions) Listen to english music ( blessed be the brits invasion of pop bands) Spending hours trying to get english speaking channels on the radio Spend your holidays working for the London hostels association ( from eighteen to twenty when I became of age of course not before) Writing to pen pals in different parts of the english speaking world Watching films in original english version ( althouth only one movie theatre did that in the country capital and so not so easy to get). English courses on cassettes Dictionaries: I preferred the synonimes/ antonimes one. But first of all having a season ticket for the local library which allowed me to get most of all I mentioned. Thanks Luke for showing current ways and devices boomers didn 't even imagine

Definitely I've learnt English vocabulary just reading.. At the beginning of my learning with "English graduated readings".. And now just reading in English. So, don't miss the opportunity of learning vocabulary and enjoying the reading .. Meaning : To kill 2 Birds with one stone : Greetings from Spain 🌟

the world of words is amazing! You can't learn a language without falling in love with its words 🙂
  • To be honest, at the beginning of your chat I thought that it was going to be a shallow discussion on why learning vocab is so important and so on. But the part where you talk about the different resources and how to use them it was really eye-opening, to the point that it made me want to sign up for the whole summit and see if I can find more inspirational tips that help me get my English to a higher level. And being the summit for free is what makes it possible for me, so thank you very much both Luke and Claire 👏👏👏

We don't teach about a language, we teach the language, as far as it is possible! And the more senses we use while we are learning, the better. Thank you, Luke. 😊
