QUANTUM LEAP (2022) Episode 1x17 REVIEW | "The Friendly Skies"

Published 2023-04-03
The penultimate episode of QUANTUM LEAP, Season One is here! This time we're leaping back to the year 1971 as we discuss Episode 1x17, "The Friendly Skies" (original airdate: March 27, 2023 on NBC). When Ben leaps aboard a 1970s passenger jet as a flight attendant, he must outwit its hijackers before it mysteriously crashes into the Atlantic. Worse? He has to do it all without Ziggy’s help.

This episode was written by Alex Berger and directed by Linda Mendoza.

Joining me again are Mike Bloxam, who has written and co-written several episodes for Quantum Leap: The Virtual Seasons, Brian Greene, the webmaster and proprietor of Al's Place Quantum Leap Fan Site, and for the first time, longtime mutual friend and co-creator of Quantum Leap: The Virtual Seasons, MJ Cogburn. Hope you enjoy our analysis and review! #taketheleap

  • Haven't watched the shows since episode 8 so I'm not going to comment on that. All I'm going to say is that I really liked helping you out with finishing Fate's Wide Wheel, even if I didn't get some of the concepts you had. 😊 I'm looking forward to reading Miss Atwater's story on VS. I know that MJ has a few stories in the line-up (maybe a 3 parter written by C.E. Krawiec and me).

Title of Reboot should of been called Project Quantum leap, since the people running the project is the main focus.
  • Hello, everyone! Glad to see it's not just me still struggling to get into this show.. The chemistry like Scott & Dean had is missing. Not sure I like the "no waiting room" thing, and if they are now in L.A., do Californians see all the lightning being discharged from the project (if there is any said lightning)? I think dramatically it was a mistake to have Ben's fiance' be his observer. Would like to see more "kisses with history" / make use of the time they are in. Also wish everything wasn't so "life & death" all the time and they allow for Ben's character to have a little fun / "fish out of water" situations... I like Ernie Hudson, but his character is underwritten and he could be removed and it wouldn't affect the show. I would have rather seen Magic be the observer.. The story concepts seem interesting, but the writing just doesn't seem to be consistent. The cliffhanger definitely reminded me of Damon's "future" VS story and also a little bit of mine when the cloned Ziggy project "Omega" exploded outside of D.C. and Sam went to the project in New Mexico and found it in ruins... Speaking of VS, good to hear it's coming back... So no stories where Sam is a counselor at a summer camp for science geeks and some little kid named Ben asks him about string theories...?
