So You Want to Become an Orthopaedic Surgeon. Here's how you can decide of orthopedic surgery is a good field for you, how to become an orthopod, and some of the lesser known truths of being an orthopedic surgeon.

Orthopedic surgery is a popular and respected surgical subspecialty within medicine. Orthopedics focuses on the surgical management of musculoskeletal conditions, from skeletal deformities to fractures and even occasionally nerve and vascular injuries. To become an orthopedic surgeon, you first need to complete medical school and earn either your MD (allopathic) or DO (osteopathic). After that, orthopaedic surgery residency is 5 years, although some programs have a mandatory research year, bringing the total to 6 years. It's a highly competitive surgical subspecialty, consistently ranking in the top 5 in terms of competitiveness, behind dermatology, plastic surgery, and neurosurgery. Compensation is in the top 3 of all specialties, averaging roughly $515,000 per year. Note that compensation, lifestyle, and type of work will all vary based on the area of orthopedics you practice. An optional fellowship allows you to further hone your expertise in pediatrics, spine, hand, foot & ankle, tumor, sports, joints, and more.

Don’t knock it till you try it ladies! I’m an orthopaedics resident and this was the best decision of my life! I’ve had to deal with my share of doubters throughout the way, but I worked my butt off throughout my journey to receive my D.O. and match into my dream specialty at a dream ACGME program. We need more female orthopods out here!
