~Information~
After finishing the To Be Kind bootleg remake, I felt inclined to follow it up with a remake of The Seer, hopefully it will not disappoint. I got to use the Haarlem Seer that was included in the To Be Kind deep cuts folder, although it was hard choosing between the Off Festival Seer (which is in this Mega folder's deep cuts) and the Haarlem Seer which I ended up going with as I found it created a more interesting tracklist.
As many songs on The Seer were never performed live by Swans, I took 3 recordings from M. Gira's solo shows, “Lunacy", "Song for A Warrior", and "A Piece of The Sky". Unfortunately, I could only find lossy mp3 recordings for "Song for A Warrior" and "A Piece of The Sky". Not too much of a bother though, I find the lo-fi quality to be charming and ever more intimate with Gira.
As for the Swans performances, I think all 4 are excellent choices. The "Mother of The World" I used was also a deep cut on the To Be Kind Mega, although I cut off the "Screenshot" portion for CD time constraints (even though this is a fan digital file release :P). The Live version has a very interesting, warping polyrhythmic version of the groove on the studio version.
"The Seer" is 64 minutes and takes up nearly half the runtime of the entire two discs, featuring the still nascent "Bring The Sun" and the studio version's groovy outro beginning to malign to the passionate, throbbing "Toussaint L'Ouverture". Not much more to say other than listen; it's an unforgettable performance.
"Apostate" in 2014 may be my favorite version of the song, split in half between a pulsing, growing tumorous groove about to bloom into "Cloud of Unknowing" and the tribal, totalist "LADDER TO GOD/SPACE C*NT" chant ballet. I find 2014 to be a year quite overlooked when it comes to Swans bootleg recordings, as the metamorphoses the "To Be Kind" and "The Seer" era songs undergo seems as euphoric as it does agonizing, the whiplike guitars coalesce in zealous sorrow in many such songs. This Apostate reaches 31 minutes, and shows Gira's mastery of the song so well that the next show, he says f*ck it all and distorts Apostate into a form that would soon mold to the shape of the Cloud of Unknowing (which can be found in the "Deep Cuts" folder on the Mega)
