Continuing our series on the Crystal Gems, today we’re looking at the Type A member of the Crew. We’re covering her personality, relationship dynamics, powers, fusions and some of the real word influences that could have shaped her character. I’m Kris Carr, and today I’m talking to you about Pearl from Steven Universe.

The fact that pearls ballerina fighting style and design always made me wondered if that’s where her hatred of eating comes from. Pearl has mentioned that she found eating a gross concept; and ballerinas do have a negative stereotype of becoming bulimic or anorexic. Also mental health wise ballerinas are known to have their own low self confidence, just like pearl. Makes you wonder.

Omg. I can't believe the whole Pink diamond thing was a year ago. I feel old.
  • Pearl: telling steven stuff Also pearl: snaps a centi baby nek infront of steven Steven: yeah im not gonna have a neck e v e r
  • Here's a Pearl fact you missed: Pearl has A GUN in her Gem. If you pause at around 11:34, you can see what looks like the butt of a rifle. Pearl is packing heat and we never even knew.

You seem to have forgotten that Our Pearl is referred to as defective by some homeworld gems. Notice that her gemstone forms an oval rather than a perfect circle. She's also called a praticular fancy pearl by Peridot. She's unquily herself.

As soon as she said hand to hand combat I just thought of, “Do you wish to engage in combat?”

we haven't seen that hologram ability for a really loooong time.
  • "Although she can't do so to the same level of Peridot" Me: (remembering when she was able to build a semi-functional spaceship in under a day with literal garbage, while Peridot, who was desperate to leave Earth was surrounded by gem technology and couldn't repair an old spaceship) YOU LIEEEE! YOU LIEEEEE! THE FILTHY EARTH BOY LIEEEEES!

I'd also like to point out that at 6:55. Pearl learning that its healthy to accept others individuality is also shown in her fusion with Steven as Rainbow Quartz 2.0. They use He/him pronouns. Why? Cause Pearl has finally accepted Steven as his own individual person and not as Pink. She accepts him, for who HE is.
  • Pearls my favorite character because I loved watching her struggle to become independent, to move on from the past, and be her own gem. Her arc was so well written and wonderfully unique. When we hear stories about slaves, you hear about how they set themselves free out of a desire to be independent and independent they become. I’ve never heard of a story where someone was raised to be solely dependent on someone else; suddenly live, learn, and really struggle to be independent from that person. In conclusion: pearl is a badass.

I think that there is some symbolism tied to Pearl’s ribbon in her second-to-last form. It was around her waist, although that doesn’t matter. The ribbon was meant to symbolize the secret of Rose being Pink Diamond and was gotten rid of after “A Single Pale Rose”, meaning that she doesn’t have to keep the secret anymore. Her newest form does not have the ribbon for this reason. I just wanted to input that bit of information! I love these videos!
  • She is my favourite character, I identify myself in her, seeing how I am basically a servant to my sister
  • @ObaREX
I'll always be a "Pearl Girl" (it's what I call her fans).
  • Pearl is the best developed character in the show, puts other character arcs in other media to shame
  • @e.e.y.1803
No one: Holo-pearl: DO YOU WISH TO ENGAGE IN-

Toon Ruins made a really eye-opening video talking about autism representation in the media, and cited Pearl as a really good example of a realistic representation of someone on the autism spectrum. I’d really recommend checking this video out
