To all the new Kendrick fans, sincerely, welcome. I done been a fan since 2013, and it’s my absolute pleasure people are waking up to how important this man is. I’m white as white could be. I’m not American. I truly, genuinely learned the culture through this man. I see the ache for his people in his eyes. I hear it in his beautiful poetry. I actually understand the racial tension so many foreigners don’t get, from the outside looking in, because of how much of a messenger he is. I wish I could shake his hand and say thank you for waking me up. It has me looking around at home in NZ in a different way. I hope you all enjoy this art, he’s not someone to take lightly.

“In a land where hurt people hurt people, fuck calling it culture” This is the deepest line in the song for me. I think what Kendrick is saying here, is that unfortunately, some of the problems that exist within the black community today, are considered “part of the culture” and almost accepted in a way. And that is unfortunate. There is nothing “black” about gangs, broken families, toxic relationships. These are results of generations of traumas that black Americans have faced, and while that should be understood, it should not be accepted as good by us.
