Chungking Express has brought Wong Kar-wai international success despite all the difficulties and shortcomings of the project. In this documentary I explore the creation and style of the director’s highly acclaimed film from 1994 with footage from interviews and talks. Explained by his colleagues such as Quentin Tarantino, Ang Lee, Tony Leung and his long-time partner and cinematographer Christopher Doyle.

Theres a million people who do "video essays" of WKW. You do the real thing. You and the guy who found the lens they used on Fallen Angels (The 6.8mm/aka the 9.8 + angle adapter)

The first time I watched Chungking Express was when I was 18 years old. I always felt it was cheesy and chaotic, like listening to a stranger recount their dream. Ten years later, I tried watching it again, and this time I truly recognized it as a masterpiece. It is a film for those who are lonely and ponder the meaning of love. If you don't empathize with and understand the psychological developments of the characters, it will be very difficult to grasp its true meaning.
  • this is a refreshing departure from the style of video essay thats taken over since Every Frame A Painting changed the game. really love it!

Every once in a while, a rare event of astronomical infrequency occurs. This is one of those blessèd times that the inscrutable algorithm serves up something special to a jaded audience, thereby giving more exposure to a deserving creator. Keep going, dude. Keep going.

1.4k subs versus 2.6k likes on the vid tells you how criminally underrated this js

BEAUTIFULLY put together. I've only seen three Wong Kar-Wai films so far: Chunking Express, In the Mood for Love, Fallen Angels. I'm actively watching them slowly so I don't rush it and run out of them quickly.

This film has been in my top 5 since I first saw it in the late 90s. The 'other half' of the story, "Fallen Angels," is fantastic too.

I really like this short-documentary style that you managed to achieve. I think is enlighting to listen to people that were involved in the film, or people like Tarantino talking about it. Keep it that way man! Congrats.

The clips from Ang's speech are brilliant!
  • This was recommended to me today which is coincidentally, WKW's birthday and I absolutely enjoyed the content! Your editing on the video was beautiful and the facts, insightful!

Youtube recommended me this vid and the thumbnail was so nice I decided to watch the movie first and then this video. Somehow never seen a Wong Kar Wai film before, this was the first. There's so many movies to watch it's hard to decide what to choose... so I kinda just let these little signs guide me. I'm very happy I did! This movie is so special and beautiful, and you put together a very cool video about it! Thanks for the sign ;)

No life is complete without spending a few nights at the Chungking Mansions. =) Chinese cinema are so underrated in the West. Thank you for showing the English speaking world what they've been missing. Your videos are well written, well edited and "enlightens" viewers to something beautiful. Subscribed.  I'm putting in a plug for my favorite movie of all time: "Light the Red Lantern". A movie in which every scene, every character, every shot and every word is perfect. Where Western cinema struggles to create complex female characters "Light the Red Lantern" does it right. Also "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is so very good. It''s like an "anti-parody" of traditional Chinese "Kung Fu" movies, which are good when taken into context. Chinese cinema is a "rabbit hole" where once you start watching it you can't stop.
  • I feel lucky to have been recommended this video. It has a very different style than other cinema video essays. It feels great to watch.
  • great video! very inspirational and cinematic with a taste of documentary. Flows very nicely
