On July 4, 2012, the discovery of the Higgs boson was announced. This was a massive, worldwide media sensation—the Higgs boson is a big deal. Who better to illustrate the importance of this monumental discovery than our very own Sean Carroll?

This video is episode one from the series The Higgs Boson and Beyond, presented by Sean Carroll.

I am not a scientist and have little scientific education - but I so enjoy learning about all things physics. And Sean Carroll is one of my favorite people to listen to and learn from. I so enjoy these lectures. Thank you.

This dude is really great at explaining this. Once he got into quantum fields I was like "oh no, this is going off the rails" but he really broke everything down quite well. Subscribed!

Paul Dirac, created the name BOSON , in honor of the Indian mathematician , Satyendra Nath Bose, who with Einstein , is the creator of the Bose-Einstein Statistics, which helped to define this group of particles. A relevant piece of history .

Great teachers and great minds are a rare combination ... Sean Carroll epitomizes both.
  • @bernardliu8526
Dr. Carroll spoke extemporaneously for some 30 minutes, without a single hitch, nor a single stutter ! Amazing ! So glad he was never in the same class as I.

0:52 the anouncement of the Higgs Boson measurement "was a massive worldwide media sensation". Of course, if there weren't a Higgs Boson, it would not have been massive... 😄

CALTECH, got a bargain to have Sean Carroll. Much more intelligent than anyone in the running.
  • I have always wanted to understand this on a higher level. You did an AMAZING job of explaining this as someone who knows little to nothing about physics.Thank you!!
  • What a beautiful lecture Mr Sean Carrol, You should be one of the most popular professors.
  • @josephmaani4567
I feel like I have been rechristened, taking me back to my college days some 30 years ago. And I could gather much more from Sean's 30 minutes lecture than I have been able to since Higgs Boson news broke out from CERN in 2012.....
  • @BD-np6bv
Sean does an EXCELLENT job at explaining. Thank you so much, Sean! You ARE making a difference.
  • @glendanison3064
I have the tiniest grasp of the concept of particles now i have fields to confuse the hell out of me.
  • Higgs Boson walks into a Catholic church: "Hey! What are you doing here?? You know you can't have Mass without me!!!"
  • @Wild_Emperor
"Nature will surprise us once again." I loved that line!
  • @martinds4895
Thanks for this great video Wondrium! Sean is the best communicator for this kind of subjects.
  • @vmayn92
Beautiful. Thanks for explaining this so clearly.
  • @peraghu
Sir hats off and bow down... You have represented all the scientists and all the history past present and future of Existence ! I want to listen to your lectures always !
  • @lk4543
Excellent presentation. Seems like he is speaking from memory and not just reading. Each time the camera angle changes it's like a new paragraph as he moves to a new topic point and he seamlessly follows the camera angle without disrupting the flow. Very compelling delivery of a complex topic and well put together with the background graphics too.
  • I’m just a retired country doctor what enjoy science so much. Thank you for your excellent presentation.
