“We have 2 kids & $0 invested, but refuse to get 9-5 jobs”

Published 2024-03-19
Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You To Be Rich talks to Callie and Travis, 36 and 39. They have two kids and live in southern Texas near the ocean. They’ve made a conscious decision to run their own small businesses without the pressure of climbing a corporate ladder. But how relaxed is too relaxed? Callie is ready to get serious; is Travis?

She keeps saying that he's smarter but the more I listen the more I realize that she is smarter than him. She didn't hesitate to give numbers and answers. She needs to realize that after college 4.0 means nothing. Some people are just book smart and not able to translate that to life skills.

After listening to Travis describe the money habits of his parents I was saddened. What happened to his mother is the story of so many women. She is eating spaghetti and her ex husband is living on an inheritance. When they were married, his mother was the person he saw juggling the finances. Now Callie is doing the same in her marriage with him. Callie should pay attention to what is happening here and protect herself and her children.

He came right out and said that he loves the huge amount of time off he gets, and declines additional clients to ensure he gets that time off. Not sure you can call that guy a "hustler". Simply owning your own business doesn't make you a hustler, if you work as little as possible.
  • She basically said - We don’t fight but I am also not allowed to be upset with the choices he makes that negatively impact our family. She also contradicts herself in saying we can have hard conversations but his eyes glaze over and he zones out. She seems to be the one putting in a majority of the effort here.

Surfers... it's always surfers.... My mom had a rule, "No contractors who surf" because she could look at the tides and know if the crew was going to show up. This is that guy.

I would have been super pissed if I gave Travis $4,000 to pay off debt and then he turns around and spends almost the exact same amount on a non-essential rack. She seems to be the only adult here and that's going to be a problem. If things don't change he will take them down the same route as his mom.

The fact that she saved $4000 and gave it to him to save him from “stress” mirrors when she saved money to buy a car as a teen and then had it taken over as the family car (for more understandable reasons).
  • @amykean6125
It is somewhat telling that she frames extra money as security, as savings, as "our money" and he views extra money that has been contributed by both of them as "my money" and spends it freely without consultation.

PS - every time I listen to this podcast, I open up my Schwab account and add more money 😂😂😂 True story

A wise man once said, “It’s ok to be zen, but sooner or later someone’s going to come take your furniture away.”
  • @ZenPT
They love not being chained by a 9 to 5 job. But as I listened to them, they don’t realize that without a plan to look ahead for their wants or retirement, their choices are making them a slave to the hustle and debt. That, I think is a more unforgiving type of slavery. You cannot be hustling until you’re 80 or paying for your fun through credit cards forever. That’s not a rich life.

There is no bigger metaphor for this situation than the massive thunderstorm behind Travis.
  • @alexfarrell2054
He got truck accessories and a whole boat for himself with a mom who may or may not always eat dinner while she is paying for kids’ clothes and counseling. Nope. I am not sure they align on even basic monthly priorities, let alone “big picture”🧐 .
  • @GeoffHerbert
The storm in the background is a a very apt metaphor for how debt and financial struggles can feel.
  • @jdelacruz1058
Callie savinf $30k as a single parent is amazing. ❤
  • @user-oy6sk8ko1w
One of the many nightmares that fathers have regarding their daughters is this dude.
  • @Hepsak42
He’s holding her back from a good life and fulfilling her potential…
  • @pdxwino
Living life like you’re in your 20’s is great, right up until you’re no longer in your 20’s. Their children have a rough road ahead.
  • Telling her that she took the wind out of his sails when he was really the one who did that to her.
