The QNAP TS464 has the specs that every Plex Synology user has been requesting, 2.5 GbE, Intel Quick Sync, and PCIe to expand for the DS923+ to become. The only problem is its missing one thing, Synology DSM. Is the DS923+ better than the TS464?

Nice comparison, glad to hear a standard 10gb.card will work in QNAP. I’m looking for plex media server exclusively for home, so am leaning to QNAP. This helps a lot

Good review, and I generally agree with your comparison. I'd be interested in hearing what you think of QNAP's security upgrades over past 6 months. They do seem to have put some work into this area, but I'm not sure how that compares to Synology features. (Warnings, security checking, bug bounty).

Thanks a lot for doing so many NAS videos with concise advices and tutorials.

Great video, thanks for the comparison.

I am a QNAP user for many years and I agree with you, they have to take security more seriously. But I personal would never expose my NAS to the internet, that's a no-go for me - for those things I got a root server. I guess the best solution for most users, if they really need it, would be to use their router with a build in VPN/Wireguard server (like e.g. Fritzbox AVM). I have always thought about buying an Synology NAS, because I like their software. Since Synology is limiting its hardware more and more, the topic is done for me, I do not tolerate such a customer unfriendly behaviour of a manufacturer. I am currently seriously thinking about an open and flexible solution based on TrueNAS.
  • A good video With some vulnerabilities going 3 years without a patch QNAP is a no, no for me. I have an old Synology DS418 4-bay still working, for home is great as long as you don't need an intel processor.

Great video, thank you. Future synology surveillance station video request; which models can add a gpu card to attach a monitor and can it support license plate capture. The vs960hd was discontinued, what’s a comparable solution such as what minipc specs could match or exceed it.

I've always used Synology, and will continue to do so when it comes to my data, however, I'm strongly considering a second QNAP nas for media streaming now. Synology is neglecting their home consumer market.

Thank you. I bought a DS920+ over the DS923+ a couple of months ago because of the GPU and Plex. I looked hard at the QNAP and opted out because synology just felt like a one stop shop. The gaping security hole you pointed out shows I made a good decision. I manage several Synologies in our Corporation and absolutely love the simplicity of it's design.

As a commercial dairy goat farm and creamery, we use a good number of PTZ dome camera with Synology Surveillance Station to monitor our kidding stalls for signs of goats in labor. As such, we find the Celeron processor to be vastly superior for our needs. That is why we find the DS920+ and DS720+ to be the NAS of choice in our business. The DSx23+ units are a total no-go for us. Also, thanks for your excellent informative videos!

Some years ago my first home NAS was a QNAP 5 drive. A few years out it developed an intermittent hardware problem that appeared to be 2 drives failing but after replacing the drives turned out to be the box. So then I had 7 good drives and a box that only had 3 reliable slots with 3 drives worth of data running in degraded mode. Luckily I was using Raid6 or it would have been a disaster (or at least a lot of work, there is a backup server). I got a Synology 8 slot so I could move over and use all the drives and am on my third Synology now, no hardware failures other than drives, and about 5x more box-years on Synology vs QNAP. Whatever architecture the QNAP was using, it was not as reliable or fault tolerant as the Synology. Clearly small statistics but the Synology software and hardware have been better in my experience. I'd like to see 2.5 Gigabit but realistically 4x 1 Gigabit is not often a real bottleneck. I'll take reliability over most features, where is the data?
  • i alway's used synology for 10 years and now i bought the qnap ts 464 because the ds 923 you can't use it for 4k plex media and i am happy now because the qnap is so much better /faster than the ds 923 easy to use and realy so much faster thanks for the comparison
  • @MrSunDevil23
I had a Synology 420 and just upgraded to a 920+. I was on the fence of getting the 923+ but it lost me on the fact it doesn’t have integrated graphics and i mostly use my NAS for Plex

I hope you can help me! I have sooo many files on my pc and external SSDs lying around on my desk. About 6 TB with videos, pictures and documents. Now that I've started a YouTube channel, there is going to be alot of video files! All I want is a box with 4 bays (maybe go with two 12TB to start with), to store aaall of my files. I want to connect with a USB to my pc and have a decent speed when tranferring files from my computer and I want it all to be mirrored. The networking part is not so important to me. Is this Synology DS923+ for me? And what do I look for in a suitable harddrive? Thank so much and cheers from Norway!
  • Hi, Very informative about the TS-464 v Synology. Im calling on your experience and knowledge as I am a bit of a novice when it comes to a NAS. I currently have an older QNAP TS-221 QTS v4.3.3 latest OS with a Marvel 2.0GHz CPU that only supports DLNA to stream to my Samsung QN90A TV. My biggest problem is I needed to create a new multimedia library as my QN90A Samsung TV recently just could not find sub folders in the main multimedia folder of videos. Now after a complete Medi Library re-build the TV is quicker by 50% and at least sees them...still damn slow taking 35 sec to bring up the sub folders but at least they are coming up. However the time for the NAS to re-generate a fresh thumbnails of some 72,000 files it is so so very slow, only decrementing # files by 1 file per 6 seconds. This is going to take around 5 days...a ridiculous wait time. Is the TS-464 also very slow at creating this quantity of thumbnails ? Is this a general QNAP issue on all their NAS servers inc the TS-464 or in fact all NAS servers of any brand in your experience? My 6TB HDD in the TS-221 QNAP is a WD60EFAX.
  • @jimcallahan448
Given the security track record of QNAP how does Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen2 4-Bay (AS6704T) compare? One issue with the Asustor model is it is either or SSD or 10 gbs network card (not both).
  • @jenniferw8963
I have my Mac Mini M2 Pro on 24/7 and is currently my Plex server with a 8TB external USB HDD attached (Seagate Ironwolf 8TB NAS HDD I bought for $209 a couple years ago.) Mac is great for transcoding. What do you think about continuing to use my mac mini as the server but acquire the DS923+ (or DS1522+) just for storage. Does plex work well that way? i.e. storing movies and tv shows (DVR recorded even) to NAS? The DVR has been reliable locally on external USB. (I think it records first to the internal ssd and then transfers the file after recording.)
  • This is a great video. I am a noob when it comes to NAS and looking to get my first device. My primary use would be Jellyfin and multimedia backup (photos that I would like to access online). When you say that you do not recommend exposing the QNAP software to the internet, does it mean that you do not recommend allowing access to your media library outside your home network? Do you recommend using QNAP for jellyfin only while on your home network?
