In this video, we look at what gear is affected, why we think this has been done, get an official word from Pioneer DJ / AlphaTheta, and tell you what you can do about it.

Their public statement is the worst... Another clear example of planned obsolescence: "your product is fine, but it hurts our business that you are not buying the much more expensive one we just released, so we are gonna punish you for that, now pay for Rekordbox"

The beginning of the end for Pioneer DJ. Well done, AlphaTheta!
  • Glad I left Pioneer DJ and went to Denon...thanks for confirming my decision to switch once again Alpha Theta

I'm a software developer, there is no good technical reason for locking out the older hardware. None at all. This is a purposeful approach to get people to upgrade to newer Pioneer gear and/or subscribe to Rekordbox
  • @grizeldiSLO
I'd accept the "not possible for technical reasons" explanation, if the same gear didn't work just fine once you subscribe. It's greed.
  • @lostalienmusic
That's why I appreciate Engine Dj/Denon Dj team for their care and advanced technology ❤️ Old prime series still get the last firmware for free, imagine 🙂
  • @DJGaryP
This is why the acquisition of serato needs to be stopped
  • @neah2k11
This feels like a cash grab. Either pay them consistently for the subscription or buy current gear. Time to switch to Virtual DJ permanently.
  • @IamPreacherMan
I sure hope regulators do not allow alphatheta to buy Serato. Alpha is pulling the smartphone trick of killing your battery. Smdh. This is the exact kind of thing that is leading farmers to sue John Deere over right to repair. It also reminds me of buying a 50-60k car and then having to subscribe to heated and AC seats. We need to push back against this death from 1000 cuts.

subscription software without a full price/buy own option should be ditched away.
  • @DJ_V_squared
Perfect opportunity for virtual dj and djay pro
  • @Nexus--9
Locking older stuff out is a choice, it doesn't suddenly become too old for it to work, it still works perfectly, to say they have to leave stuff behind is utter bollocks
  • @sevsekjoze6251
Bad for pioneer😱👎, but I use the XDJ-R1 for ten years as the main dj controller, I've been using virtual dj since the beginning and it works without any problems...💪
  • @MadelnMachines
The biggest corporations often seem to behave in the most unscrupulous ways
  • @Lordblanca
Just switch to virtual dj and call it a day.
  • @KelseyBDJ
And Denon DJ are still updating the SC5000s from 2017...
  • @kudamah
The fact that virtualdj will work with all those units and that they are not natively made for virtualdj says to me that pioneer is just plain greedy. Plain talk
  • @No--0--Spin
Here is what you can do...buy Virtual DJ PRO Infiniti for a one time $300 fee and you own it for life(with all upgrades) Way better than rekordbox
