Cuenca Ecuador Expat Life on a $1,039 monthly budget (Cost of Living Ecuador)

Published 2020-12-06
This video is meant to show the quality of life you can experience as an Expat living on a $1,039 a month budget in Cuenca Ecuador.

Ecuador is affordable, and the lifestyle you can have on a typical Social Security check of $1,500 a month for a single person or $2,500 for a couple is very attractive. Budgets vary, and many live in Cuenca Ecuador on much less than $1,500 and others far exceed $1,500. We've met people living on under $1,000 while we've been here, so that is a possibility.

Julie and I retired early not by luck but by planning.
One of our spokes to our wheel for savings, and now an income stream
is Fundrise. Basically we are invested in many apartment complexes around the country.
We get a portion of the rents in the form of dividends, and growth in value with the appreciation
of the properties. We currently have selected an income REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust)
which historically pays between 7.5% - 9% annually in dividends. You can chose a balanced REIT which has a split between appreciation and dividends or a REIT where it's focused on appreciation and not dividends.
Check it out to see if it's a fit for your savings, or retirement strategy. Feel free to share this with those you feel may benefit from this program.

I’m an Ecuadorian living in Houston, but I remember going to Cuenca every spring for break and loving everything about the city. Although Guayaquil is where my home is, I have always had a soft spot for the Andes. Took my wife to city outside of Cuenca in 2003 and we fell in love with it’s highland country feel.
  • I love Cuenca, Ecuador. I spent six months there earlier this year. As a world traveler, it is one of my favorite places and I may retire there in five years or so.

Visited Cuenca about 10 years ago. Stayed behind a coffee shop owned by a couple from Australia. Absolutely loved Cuenca!
  • My college Spanish professor was from Quito; I always had a hankering to go. Now I know why.

I really appreciate this video! I’ve mostly traveled in Mexico but am going to have to experience Cuenca. I love the detail you offer in the presentation of a typical budget. It’s amazing how much having a car and miscellaneous expenses can blow up a budget. This person has created a lovely and interesting life!
