The Indian High Commission in Dhaka Thursday advised Indians in the country to avoid leaving their places of residence in the wake of the intense anti-quota protests that have killed at least a dozen people. The protests against reservation in government jobs for the family members of Liberation War veterans prompted the Bangladesh government to close all universities, schools and colleges for an indefinite period late Tuesday. The government even asked residential students to leave their dormitories.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has assured Mauritius of India's consistent support on the issue of the Chagos Archipelago, which is in line with the principled stand on decolonisation and support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations. The comments by Jaishankar, who is currently on a two-day visit to Mauritius, are important since the sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean is disputed between Mauritius and the United Kingdom. Mauritius has repeatedly stated that the archipelago is part of its territory and that the UK's claim violates United Nations resolutions banning the dismemberment of colonial territory. Since 1971, it has served as a military base to the US and houses 2,500 American-military personnel and temporary foreign workers, mostly Filipino.
