High Voltage Gas Insulated Switchgear (HV-GIS) installations contain the same individual elements used in a regular air insulated substation: current transformer (CT), potential transformer (PT), isolating switches, and circuit breaker (CB). However, due to the type of insulating medium, SF6 and other new gases, accessing each element for testing purposes is not easy, if not impossible, without disassembling a section of the GIS; the main alternative to avoid disassembling and thus, long and costly shutdowns, is accessing the equipment terminals through the grounding connections. Assessing the insulation also requires approaches outside of the conventional insulation resistance and power factor testing. Gas analysis and partial discharge are the recommended testing methods.

This webinar will discuss HV-GIS electrical and insulation tests, including the recommended techniques to overcome the challenges imposed by the enclosed nature of the switchgear. The main focus will be CT, PT, CB timing and travel, contact resistance, and partial discharge. For the purpose of partial discharge testing both the sensitivity check performed during the acceptance/commissioning period and routine testing will be covered.
