The new Class 720 Aventra is beginning to roll out across the Greater Anglia network. I've come to Witham to ride on the new trains down the Braintree branch line so I can tell you everything you need to know about the new rolling stock.

1. The Class 720 Aventra was designed and constructed by Bombardier Transportation, now owned by Alstom, at their Derby Litchurch Lane Works in the UK.

2. To accompany the introduction of the fleet, the TOC has invested roughly £300 million in new and refurbished infrastructure, including depots, sidings, and upgrading station platforms.

3. Greater Anglia's new fleet of Aventras will be replacing their Class 317s and Class 379s that operated West Anglia services, as well as their Class 321s and Class 360s which operated Great Eastern services.

4. Testing commenced on the 17th of March 2020, but the units were planned to be introduced to passenger service a year before. This was because of software issues with the Train Control Management System that is found onboard.

5. The first two units finally entered passenger service in November 2020. Since then, the Class 720s have rolled out across Braintree and Southminster services and more recently, Clacton, Colchester Town, and Ipswich services.

These trains look solid in the flesh - they have a substantial presence and seem huge on the move, despite the loading gauge

Very underrated channel, great editing and information no other review channels have
  • @omegamezle
Saw 2 of these coupled up racing up the WCML today 👀
  • @Draavo

100th View :D Nice video! I can tell you put time and effort into your videos :D

Very Relaxing and Informative Video. I'm finding it hard to come to terms that these trains are probably my favourite trains on the UK, seeing how much I like the Class 375, but they have to be my favourite just because of their modern interior, and they look very nice. I believe the 44 ex-10 car Mk1 Units are now to be classified as 720101-720144, according to the Wikipedia page on these excellent units. Your video was very friendly to the watcher in terms of the simple captions and I love how the captions and the graphics help explain this much better to us viewers.

Amazing to see you back on the railways seb, I still haven't been but I will be going soon!

I'll definitely put this in my "to ride list" once I return to visit the UK.

The 720 is far more comfortable and accessible compared to the 321s and 317s. I never went on a 360 but like the 379s they seemed fine, and not in desperate need of replacement, although the aventra is a step up. I'm not a fan of the entire train being tableless and 3+2, but I'm sure I will be once they start filling up with London commuters again
  • Ahh, another great video about Greater Angilia and the GEML! time to watch it 😂

Fitting 5 across seating in to the miniscule Victorian UK railway loading gauge is always going to be squeezing a quart in to a pint pot however shiny the new equipment. It is noticeable looking at bloggers sitting in one of the seats how their shoulders always intrude in to the next seat space. I remember in my old awful commuting days on this wretched line there on occasion almost being fights at Chelmsford as people squeezed in to the centre seats. It also looks like the cable channel at the base of the outside seats is still there making an uncomfortable twisting of the legs.

I like these trains even though they are fictional unlike the class 357s and the proper late great class 302s from the happy days. Might as well replace the rectangular windows with hexagon, pentagon or octagon shaped ones. 😂😂.

Nice review on the new trains mate. Keep it up!😀 Also, are you absolutely sure that the class 730 is a aventra? Because when I saw the photos, they didn't look recognizable to be your typical aventra.

317s and 321s still run for now and i miss the 360s and 91s

On Wednesday is going to be the 2nd anniversary of East Midlands Railway joining the railway

For 'opposite' seats, these are known as 'facing' seating. For your information, wheelchair users will board/alight from the train with the vehicle which has both tip up seating and the universal accessible toilet. Best wishes and take care. Kind regards, Peter Skuce. St Albans. Hertfordshire.
