How Chess Spread from India to the World | Flashback with Palki Sharma

Chess is played by millions of people around the world. It is a highly organised game with a dedicated fan base. But have you wondered how chess emerged as a board game? Historians trace its origin to 6th century India, where a similar board game was quite popular among kings and traders. It was taken by royal ambassadors and travellers to different parts of the world, including China and West Asia. Local rulers and cultural differences influenced and changed the ancient Indian game. How did that game evolve into modern-day chess? Who created the rules and designed the chess pieces? Palki Sharma tells you on Flashback.

We have a temple in Tamil Nadu called Chathuranga Vallabhanathar Temple in tiruvarur district which was built around 5 to 10 century CEwhich talks about military strategies dedicated to lord Shiva , The interesting thing is that lord Shiva himself played chess. Even our Bharat prime minister Modi referred to this during the opening ceremony of the international chess game in Chennai
  • As a Kenyan, India has always been a great civilization. The food, music (Lata Mangeskar, etc), the old architecture, the traditional clothes, CHESS, and much more. The only issues i think India has is the caste system, and corruption. Not saying my nation is perfect, just saying all nations have their good and bad. I loved India when i visted New Delhi.

The predecessor of chess was found in Lothal, around 4500-5000 years ago. The Mantri (modern Queen), The Rook, the Pawns look same. (I have even seen pic of horse piece (Knight) found at Lothal, Gujarat, but not able to find).
  • Trust an Englishman to patent something invented in India by Indians! No surprises there...
  • As an avid chess player who has been playing for decades since childhood I absolutely loved this historical piece. Thank you and best of luck to Gukesh against Ding from the USA! Cheers!
  • Chess began in India as chaturanga, then travelled with traders to Persia (becoming shatranj). The Muslim world spread chess further, and by the 15th century, Europe had its own version with familiar rules. Chess also reached Asia, inspiring games like Chinese chess
  • @lostashmish
Nagaland too has large huge stone monolitics chess board. And ancient legends link that belt to Bheem... It surely is from pre Mahabhrat Period 5K+ BCE (7K years ago) as Chaturranga by then had been a mainstream game like Kabaddi, Ball-Games, Wrestinlg etc
  • The modern chess was invented by the Persians. They also invented the backgammons and checkers games. Indians invented Chaturanga which is a totally different game with different board feature and different rules but there has been hard effort for decades to pass it off as an Indian invention!
