This Confederate submarine used a giant black powder bomb to sink a Yankee ship during the U.S. civil war, killing dozens and disrupting wartime logistics. Despite being a Yankee myself, I concede that this vessel was ahead of it's time and that the men who powered/piloted it were an impressively determined group of folks. Almost as impressive are the people who were involved in discovering, raising, relocating, restoring and displaying the Hunley submarine. For those wondering - the Hunley was a true submersible but, after sinking twice and killing several men, orders were that it be used as a semi-submersible. During the attack, the submariners disobeyed orders and fully submerged, likely leading to their deaths.
