Identifying Healthy Fats - with Dr. Catherine Shanahan | The Empowering Neurologist EP. 105

Published 2020-08-16
Today on The Empowering Neurologist, I spend some time with Dr. Catherine Shanahan, author of the new book The Fatburn Fix. In her new book, Dr. Shanahan makes it very clear that we need to reassess our notions of fearing dietary fat and embrace the idea that making good decisions as it relates to the type of fats we consume will help ensure our health.

Please enjoy this interview.

  • Due to hypersensitivities because of a central nervous system disorder , my body and brain would only accept anti inflammatory foods which includes wild fish and coconut oil. I have lost 30kg over 5 years and every blood parameter has changed. My CRP dropped from 4.5 to 0.4. It really just blew me away. I am grateful to my condition for teaching me this incredibly valuable information so thank you to you for bringing al this to light for so many people. 🙏

The best way to mobilise you fat stores (lose weight), is to stop eating. I lost 45 lbs in 6 months by eating ONE fabulous meal per day. What makes this work is to avoid carbohydrates which cause insulin which makes you store fat and get hungry. Insulin is the key to weight loss because when you have it under control, you control metabolic hunger.

The extremely complex world of nutrition and physiology need to be reduced to a few common sense concepts for everyone to grasp, and I think Dr. Chanahan does a great job at exactly this! The strongest correlation with the increased obesity and metabolic failure rate is... GDP. Sugar and meat consumption all stagnated or decreased at some point in the 40y where obesity kept rising -- so we know they are not the culprits. The only thing that kept growing was seed oils use. Nothing is proven yet, but the strongest hypothesis goes like this: the more we modernize the food supply, the more we use seed oils (which are convenient and cheap), the more we wreck our metabolisms. It's an excellent rule of thumb to keep the less processed fat in your diet (olive oil, coconut oil, butter) while keeping the chemically extracted ones at bay (canola, sunflower, etc.).

Dairy and Beef raised eating lots of GRAIN PRODUCTS... are NOT the same as Dairy and Beef raised eating a diet of DIVERSE FORAGE PLANTS... Grown on healthy soil. Beef with the right genetics (not like modern Beef bred to be fed GMO GRAIN) have Omega-3 levels HIGHER than Wild raised Salmon.

Are all seed oils bad ? There are so many around. Are they all similarly structured ? Take linseed oil for example or hemp oil or thistle oil
  • This is one outstanding interview; very knowledgeable info on good/bad fats.

  • I found the ideas in the book "the diet of the mind" very interesting, and I tried to follow the diet, however, I am thin, and exactly everything that says in the book to eat has few calories and ends up making me extremely thin to the point that my arms hurt. .. I tried to read the most recent edition of the book, I went to the end and I still haven't found any recommendations for this diet for skinny people .... I'm Brazilian, I don't have access to your videos here on youtube to know if you talk about this diet for skinny, help me🇧🇷🙏✌️
