Ubisoft to the Japanese "Wait.. you don't like Chinese lanterns?"

  • It's odd that they say that an ac game set in Japan was a long-cherished dream when they said that it would be boring about 10/12 years ago. It was the fans that wanted that but the devs basically said no. Other than that, this whole "apology" reads like corpo speak for shareholders.

US people - "Yeah that looks cool." Japanese people - "Dude, that fcking weird to see Chinese design & architecture in Feudal Japan."

Claims Historical Fiction - But Calls Yasuke a LEGENDARY HISTORICAL SAMURAI They also still refuses to use Kunoichi
  • @Neil.02
Basically "Sorry you noticed! we won't change anything whatsover though because we don't actually care about your culture nor respect it in any way " "We share your passion" Good joke.
  • @JustCauseFan
this is not an apology, this feels more like we are sorry you feel like that and not we are sorry we messed up

I think this is the first time they have made a playable protagonist in an AC game an existing historical person. They always kept historical people as people you meet in the game. It would have been best that they keep the samurai character as just a character you met in the game. If they really wanted to have a black character as the protagonist then make a fictional person for the role.

core of all this mess with Ubisoft game boils down to Thomas Lockley's fabricated fake HISTORICAL book as long as game based closely on Lockley's book this just keep going on forever, never stop.
  • Their apologize: we are sorry that we got caught trying to make it look "historically accurate", we will try not get caught next time.
  • @hoofstermon2982
Ubisoft: were very sorry but we actually dont like money, we like the cause more
  • Consulted historians like the discredited Thomas Lockley? Can relate to the frustration japanese have about appropriation, because my culture has also been milked for entertainment. And everytime someone has pointed out it's harmful to depict my people or our history a certain (inaccurate) way, they tout "respect" and "admiration", or "we just wanted to celebrate your culture, you should really be thanking us for bringing in more interest!" This Ubisoft response is the basic appropriation response 101.

Itallians would get The Godfather theme
  • As a Japanese person, I always enjoy the quirky depictions of Japan in fiction, but I don't appreciate it when they are used for political agendas. I'm not boycotting, but I'm simply not interested in Ubisoft open world games anymore. They are at least 10 years too late for this.

I am Japanese. Since Yasuke's master was Oda Nobunaga, whether Yasuke was a samurai or not is a trivial issue for Japanese people. Japanese people are angry at the act of disrespecting the history of UBI, infringing on cultural properties and copyrights, and are angry at the lack of a concrete apology. Freedom of expression should be protected, but we must also take responsibility for what happens.
  • @vargsieber
the only thing that could save that mess is ubisoft delaying and completely rewriting the game and have an actual japanese samurai main character instead of yasuke. they can still have him in the game as a side character who serves his master if they want him in the game.

This is not “apology” this is declaration of war.
