“His entire world revolved around her”

When cops break into the Groene home on May 16th 2005 after receiving a call from a concerned neighbor, no one is prepared to find the family murdered, and as they identify everyone, they notice that the younger children, Dylan, 9, and Shasta, 8, are missing. As the authorities race against time to find the missing kids, Shasta is trapped in the woods with her family’s killer, nearly 100 miles away, and starts to plan her own escape.

Stop letting child predators out of prison - ever.
  • @SanguiphiliaTV
The neighbor stopping by to pay the kid $10 for mowing the lawn is incredibly heart breaking :(

I love how everyone in the dennys knew to not make a scene but all were prepared to stop him from leaving.

He was already a level 3 sex offender. Why was he out to begin with??? Those murders and her fate never had to happen. Blame the courts for allowing it.

This little girl’s phenomenal intelligence and ability to to read people saved her life. This man should have NEVER been let out of prison.

Slade dying at 13 was heartbreaking, he’s barely entered his teen years and he’s been murdered and died a slow and painful death. I’ve seen so many cases of teens being murdered and as a teen myself, it’s genuinely horrifying to know. And the young children being fed drugs and alcohol makes it so much worse, Dylan being shot and murdered at 9 years old is horrific. This entire case is disgusting. That man is a sick sick man and should have never been released after his first count of S/A. They looked like such sweet kids, Slade and Dylan looked like they could grow up to be beautiful men and that disgusting man Joseph took that away from them. He traumatised Shasta at such a young age, who would ever even think of doing something like that.
  • This little girl was literally so smart and the fact that an 8yr girl can manipulate a terrible man is unbelievable am Glad she’s safe today.
  • There is ZERO reason to keep child sex offenders alive. Death penalty, first offense.
  • The part where Slade gathered strength to go to his mom to die by her side made me burst out in tears. The fear he felt and the feeling that he knows he’s also about to die found comfort in his mom’s lifeless body until the light of life leaves his body as well. May all of you rest in peace.
  • How can a judge release someone who murdered multiple people including children ? And still sleep at night? Crazy

slade crawling back into the house to be with his mom as he died just breaks my heart, that poor boy.

How did a judge put Shasta in a correctional centre for substance abuse especially after knowing what she had been through, but the court system let a level 3 sex offender walk the streets? WTF???!!!!
  • @catgirl1999
the detail that slade made it back into the home to pass next to his mother just tore me apart. what wonderful parents they mustve been.

Y’all talking about Slade but all I can think about is Dylan :((( the entire family suffered so much, I can’t imagine how traumatized she was watching Dylan, the person she was closest too, die in front of her. Absolutely heartbreaking, my chest HURTS for her. Rip Slade, Dylan & the rest of the family 💔

The whole situation is beyond heartbreaking. But what I also found heartbreaking is how she was in a correctional facility as a teenager relating to her drug use. It just reiterated how incredibly flawed our system is. Despite her history, her pain, her trauma, her PTSD- she was still punished for merely trying to lessen her pain. The courts aren’t trauma-informed by any means, rather than getting her the help she needed they punished her for self medicating her own trauma. I find it both incredibly disturbing & ironic that a child who was severely traumatized by the murder of her entire family + being sexually abused, was locked up in a correctional facility, meanwhile the very man who had inflicted such horrific damage upon her was released from prison (prior to) murdering her family and kidnapping her. The very system that punished her for her addiction in response to her trauma, is the same system that allowed this predator back out on the streets which ultimately resulted in what he did to her in the first place. The system created a situation in which this man victimized further children, and then punished the victim as she struggled to cope years later. She was just trying to survive the pain she was going through. Gabor Mate made a statement that I think fits here: “Addiction is not a choice that anybody makes; it's not a moral failure. What it actually is: it's a response to human suffering.” Being sober for 6 years myself now, I’m so proud of her that she was able to overcome that. She had unimaginable hurdles thrown at her at such a young age, and yet she SURVIVED in so many more ways than one ❤️ she survived what he did to her and her family, and she’s continued to survive every single day since. That’s the definition of a true survivor. Her strength is an inspiration and I hope she continues to heal & thrive.
  • It made me cry when he said Slade used his final strength to be together with his Mom. They seem to be a really great family. Why in the world does this have to happen to them?
  • @divakim206
So wait, he got to live until 2021? Unacceptable! I'm so sorry for what Shasta had to endure with that monster but I'm glad she was able to survive and help him get arrested. Rest in peace to Brenda, Slate, Dylan and their stepdad.🙏❤️
  • She's a real girl of Steel... Have never felt this emotional watching a crime documentary!!! Just WOW!! She's truly gifted!!
