South Africa might be about to swear in the incumbent Cyril Ramaphosa for a second term but it is by no means business as usual.

Mr Ramaphosa's African National Congress party was humbled at the election 2 weeks ago, losing its ruling majority for the first time since they took power after apartheid.

So Mr Ramaphosa was forced to negotiate a coalition agreement with the second largest Democratic Alliance party, today forming a new national unity government.

“SA needs a pivot into a direction of a more equal society” ??? I would say we should focus on being a country with a stronger economic focus, a not constantly failing electricity grid and a more attractive outlook for foreign investment. It’s so annoying to me this constant focus still on the A word, it’s literally just a tool used by politicians and not something most South Africans think about on a daily basis as these news stories would make people believe.
  • I am hoping that this works, as a former resident of that beautiful country, I'd hate to see it go the way of Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 🤞

Bless SA ❤ Their democracy was so hard won. I realise they have problems, but considering all the apartheid apologists were saying the whole country will be ablaze without it.. 🤷‍♀️ Coupled with that they had a 70% voter turn-out! What's the UK's? 50%? Less on July 4th i recon.. I'd say their population is very invested in their democratic process. Europe could learn something..

I think this was the best outcome for the country - I think the DA representatives will help bring about effective competent governance and help improve the domestic situation. Hopefully now the energy grid, education and local economy will improve and people will begin living more comfortably.
