Jeffrey Lundgren: The Kirtland Massacre

Published 2024-05-13
Jeffrey Lundgren was a self-proclaimed prophet of God who announced to his flock that the Scriptures were commanding him to move to Kirtland, Ohio, to receive his true power from God. But there, in the quiet pastoral community, he became drunk with power and his teachings became extravagant, embracing acts of violence and sexual assault. His orgy of power culminated in the slaughter of five of those who had trusted in him.

Horrific. Telling children lies to get them to go willingly to their deaths. Showing them the dead bodies of their parents, and putting them on top of them before slaughtering them. How could a whole group of people participate in that?
  • How do you tell the difference between a cult and a religion? Aren't all prophets "self proclamed"? I mean... does anyone else hear the voices? If they could, why would we need prophets?

Okay Skd, this is exactly what I need to relax. Lots of love Skd. I will never comprehend why people behave the way they do. Humanity is incredibly foolish.

Dennis and Cheryl Avery attended the same RLDS congregation that my parents and I did in the early 1970s through the early 1980s, before they became involved with Jeffrey Lundgren's cult. I remember when each of their daughters were born, and while I believe that they were easily led and naive, none of them deserved what happened to them. It's important to remember that most of the Mormon derived denominations place a strong emphasis on the concept of divine revelation. In other words, someone can tell you that God is speaking through them, which makes it difficult for some people to dispute what is being said. It's not surprising, therefore, that sooner or later someone would come along claiming to speak under the spirit but saying false things. When I was 16, I attended a church retreat during which a priesthood member whose daughter I was friends with in school spoke to several of us, including me, under the spirit. I don't remember exactly what was said, but it made a great impression on me, as even though I was born 4th generation into the church on my mother's side, my parents were more liberal in doctrinal interpretation, and the congregations we usually attended were not ones in which divine revelation was routinely encountered. Dennis and Cheryl left my family's congregation for that reason, is my understanding. Lundgren and his people were ultra orthodox in their interpretation of RLDS early doctrines. From the perspective of more than 40 years on, and nearly 40 years after leaving my childhood religion behind in the mid-1980s, I know that most of the priesthood members including my late father were good and well-intentioned. Unfortunately, Dennis and Cheryl and their daughters became the victims of someone who was not.
