  • ……the actor who played ‘Prince Tuan’ is an Australian, Sir Robert HELPMANN. He was not only an excellent actor, but a world famous Ballet dancer, & a singer, too. He did all the choreography for this film.

Any movie with a cast of excellent actors like Charles Heston of Ben Hur, and David Niven ( in most British movie) can never disappoint the viewers Not ever! Trust me. I grew up watching them all.

Ava Gardner was 40 at the time of the movie, which was quite old by the criterias of the time, especially taking into account her lifestyle was not exemplary. However the remains of her beauty shine wonderfully , she is mesmerizing.
  • I was a around 10/11 years old, when i saw the movie at Chennai, lndia, some times in early 1960 s. I remember few scenes. Now i enjoy the movie. I am 70 years old.

Therre were 409 soldiers defending the legation of which 54 were American, the British had more, in the relief that came, 2,000 American soldiers came, 10,000, Japanese soldiers, 4,000 Russian soldiers, 3,000 British soldiers...the role the Americans played was not that significant and this is a great film but lousy from a historical point.
  • Great movie with a classic Hollywood happy ending. They don't make it like this any more!

Fun fact: The melody you hear at 1:50 is not the German national anthem. Being a federal state, Germany had no official anthem back then. The common replacement (Wikipedia calls it "Kaiserhymne" or "imperial anthem") was "Heil Dir im Siegerkranz", which used the melody of "God save the King/Queen", and that would've been awkward as it is played a few seconds later by the Brits. The melody played is from "Lied der Deutschen" (music by Joseph Haydn), the German national anthem in one form another since 1922.

I remember this movie as a child. It put my fellow Europeans as the heroes. It fails to mention part of the reason for the Boxer rebellion was the forced importation of Heroin from Afghanistan and India, in exchange for Silver and Tea, by European powers, among other liberties. It caused massive damage to Chinese society. Heroin became cheap and plentiful, and a massive addiction problem began in society. The Europeans were destroying Chinese culture too.

I remember seeing it in beautifully filmed 70mm. Quite a spectacle on the giant widescreen!

Saw this movie on its first release 60 or so years ago. Thank you for the superb quality of this upload. Great cast. I have read of the various production problems but I don`t think the result is half bad. I like the idea of ballet star Robert Helpmann, who makes an excellent villain of Prince Tuan, putting the actors through the steps of the Military Two Step.

This was the second film N. Ray shot in Spain for Samuel Broston"Emporium". Being the first "King of Kings" much better than the second. China was created not far away from Madrid and indeed it looks credible. Ray spent long time living in Madrid.. Even he was a "Bar" owner which He called "Nikka's". "55"is not definitely a great film but it is Cinema History.. Mainly here in Spain. Thanks so much for uploading this film on such pristine copy and Greetings from Spain 🌟

Thanks for this movie. I purchased this film many years ago on dvd and still have it but your presentation is much clearer than the one I have.
  • a 1963 flic. War & Peace, massive movie, 1956. Ben Hur 1959, Cleopatra 1963. Those were the days of old-style, old-school, highly expensive Hollywood productions. It was the end of the road for that kind of movie, though. Dr. No of 1962 and the Spaghetti Westerns that started in 1964, and the new wave movies in France, set the stage for the end of these classic mass scenery movies. Is that a pity?
  • In the good old days, when it arrived in the Danish Movie Theatres, I saw this film, as a young Person! It ends with - ah I think I have forgot eventually, but it is a fine ending! Finn. Denmark
