We’re up against an epidemic of chronic metabolic diseases. One thing they all have in common is a component of insulin dysregulation. Take that into account with the fact that 90% of people who have insulin resistance are going to the doctor and remaining undiagnosed. Why then, are we testing everything but insulin? Today, I take a deep dive into the topic of insulin resistance and metabolic health with Dr. Ben Bikman.

Dr. Bikman is a renowned metabolic research scientist and a popular speaker on human metabolism and nutrition. Backed by years of research, Dr. Bikman’s mission is to help the world appreciate the prevalence and relevance of insulin resistance. He is the author of the book, Why We Get Sick, which offers a thought-provoking yet real solution to insulin resistance and reversing pre-diabetes, improving brain function, shedding fat, and preventing diabetes. Dr. Bikman has a Doctor of Philosophy in Bioenergetics from East Carolina University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in metabolic disorders with the Duke-National University of Singapore Medical School.

  • Dr. Hyman u already understand this. We don't. Please let this man's thoughts stay on track so WE can learn and understand.
  • @3225Angela
Ben Bikman explains everything so clearly, and Mark wants to be the center of the interview 🙄
  • @AS-tw1uz
Ben is brilliant, if only Mark would be quiet & let him speak - Mark constantly interrupts the guests in every interview, it's so frustrating
  • @Gesundheit888
Ben Bikman is a very polite individual. Even when he gets interrupted (quite often and unnecessarily) he stops talking, smirks and when allowed goes on with the subject. Very nice man! and super interesting. Too much witticism is not advantageous to a serious conversation.
  • @beleares
Dr. Bilkman is an absolute wizard in his field. Wish that he was allowed to speak without interruptions next time.
  • Mark should really let his guests talk with no interruptions so that they can relay their message in a way that flows.

I owe these two fine gentlemen my life! It was 12 midnight, January 7, 2022, I woke up to a very painful stomach. Went to the toilet, was writhing in pain on the toilet seat. I literally wanted to die from the pain. What's worse was nothing was coming out! After about 30mins of the most excruciating pain in my life, I started defecating. I breathed a sigh of relief and I started FBing on my phone, and I happened upon this video. I've never engaged in health videos before. Never heard of either doctors before. How FB's algorithm decided to show me this video is nothing short of God's divine intervention. This video jump started my journey to eating healthy (no processed food, no sugar, low carb, lots of veggies and whole food). I am obese (272lbs, 5' 8", 44yo, male) and overweight by 110lbs last Jan 12. Now, 3 months and 1 week later, I am only 220lbs! I lost 52lbs! And I won't stop losing weight until I reach my ideal body weight of 160lbs. Currently in day 4 in what I hope would be a 7 day water fast. Previously, my longest water fast was 5 days. I hope Dr. Hyman won't mind, but I would also like to mention the other doctors that helped me in my journey: Dr. Pradip Jamnadas, Dr. Jason Fung, and Dr. Eric Berg. You, guys, rock!!!!

Tests: 1. Fasting Insulin should be below 5 2. Oral Glucose tolerance test ( at 30 mins, and at 2 hour) 3. Triglyceride to HDL ratio should be less than 1.5 - no insulin resistance. If above 1.5 , there is insulin resistance 4 . Waist to height ratio - if waist circumference ( around navel) times 2 is higher than height , there is insulin resistance. If less, there is none. 5. Skin signs Skin tags, acanthosis nigricans Lipid test NMR- LDL particle no and size CRP, uric acid , liver function test. Management : (small fat cells just multiply and dont become insulin resistant , not inflammatory ; big fat cells, hypertrophy, insulin resistant , inflammatory). 1. Exercise: the best is the one you do, particularly after the most starchy, spiking-insulin meal. This makes cells insulin sensitive, 2. Supplements: berberine, cinnamon, vitamin D, alfa-lipoic acid, magnesium, omega 3 fats, biotin, chromium 3. Medications: metformin ( is only half as effective as lifestyle changes) 4. Nutrition: control insulin by control carbohydrates, prioritize protein , and dont fear fats. Eat when hungry, dont Control carbs, eat them, dont drink them , dont eat them out of boxes and barcodes, Eat them from vegetables and fruits. Get high quality protein, lots of it. Focus on ancestral fat, from fruit fats and animal fats. - dairy fat, avocado , olives/olive oil, coconut oil, nuts ( seed oils cause fat cells to go into hypertrophy-inflammatory route; also saturated fats are stable but seed oils ( polyunsatirayed oils) are unstable and become easily oxidized which is phagocytosed by macrophages ( start of atherosclerosis).

    Please stop interrupting Mark! 🙏🏽
  • @douglasx6915
Hi Mark, as a debate coach, you need to allow people to talk…and stop agreeing with people. It’s a common tick that is highly irritating in a podcast format. Otherwise, it was a very good conversation.
  • @carolhudson1194
People have commented that Mark doesn't allow his guests to talk. I understand this. He gets excited and wants to get his reply out before he forgets what he will say. (I have the same problem, I tend to interrupt people too, I must find a way to stop doing this). I have learned so much from this video and believe I will reverse my type 2 diabetes.
  • @giselruiz2285
Love Dr Bikman, he is so knowledgeable, love to hear him speak, I wish he wouldn’t get interrupted so much when he’s is trying to make a point.
  • Man Mark I wish you had not interrupted your speaker guest it makes it so much harder to understand what he was saying and it is not Lypo it is lipo
  • In Australia, fasting insulin tests are commonly ordered. In fact, it picked up my high A1C and put me on the path to serious diet reassessment. A low-carb diet saw me drop from 84kgs to 56 kgs. My sore knee, which the physio said was caused by arthritis was really just inflammation caused by a high carb/sugar diet. At almost 60, I’m now running pain free and not staring down the barrel of Type 2 like my father. Thanks for this wonderful reinforcement of the only truly healthful way of eating.
  • Mark excellent interview. This guy!s brain is on fire. He is clearly burning keytones.Overall best detailed talk I have ever heard about insulin/glucose/fats/diebetes
  • @mariah8197
Not gonna lie, this isn't the first time I've seen Mark interrupt with comments that don't even need to be said. I'm not sure if he's trying to be cool. But I always feel bad for the special guest. It comes off in a really rude, condescending way that triggers me. Great video though. I can listen to this topic & bikman go on for the rest of my life haha. Thanks for the content.

My dad had intestinal ischemia, had 3m removed and has a stomabag. He was lean, in his mid 70s. He lost a lotnof weight and has trouble absorbing nutrients. We noticed his mood improved and what we think is early signs of dementia have gone. His hand eye coordination, memory etc are all back to normal. Also he is now interested in the news and is talkative again, before this for the pass years he only gave 1 word answers. I have gone keto and fasting, now on dirty keto and have gone from obese to overweight and still losing weight.
