This is going on my "List of reasons not to live in the US" Seriously, I've never even entertained the idea of buying from a cell service provider. Every phone I've held in my hands has been bought at an electronics store, bar none.

If you can afford it, it’s absolutely cheaper to buy your phone outright and get a carrier like Mint Mobile or Metro. It’s also funny every time a salesman tries to pitch their carrier to me and then they just give up when I tell them I have Mint because they can’t compete with that price.

Solution: buy unlocked phones not from a service provider, and don't buy expensive junk. A last year's Moto flagship is plenty.

Solution: buy from somewhere like Amazon or another retailer that sells them unlocked. Have kept all of my phones, and now have the ability to use one as a camera and another as an extra security measure.

Here in Serbia, you can always just go and buy a new phone and they won't take your old phone. On top of that, if decide to still give them your old phone, you will get the new one for half the price or sometimes even for free.
