If there was a possible third let's go starter I'd assume it'd be Clefairy
  • @risuwolf
I like to believe Clefairy was in the 3rd Pokéball in Let's Go, since it was considered as the Pikachu-esque mascot and subsequently almost got a Pink version game
  • I always thought it was named Pallet town because all the other towns are named after colours so the place you'd start when painting would be to use a pallet to apply the colours
  • Gen 1 being inspired by Earthbound / Mother made me realize how much more sense it made having Pokemon Trainer and Lucas team up in Brawl's Subspace Emissary

20:50 this leads to an interesting point: it's noted that Lt. Surge served in "the war" and in 1st gen this was strongly assumed to be based on a real-life war of some sort, given the setting included a lot more influence from and allusions to real life back then. Thing is, there are two strong contenders for which conflict this was supposed to have been: either the Gulf War (being the most recent conflict) and WWII (an assumption you sometimes just see for the obvious reason of "it'd be interesting to assume Surge was a WWII vet and former occupation personnel who went on to move to Japan and end up a gym leader"). On the one hand, the latter seems anomalous given how young Lt. Surge looks, if we assume the game was set in the same general time period it was released, making the "based off the Gulf War" interpretation much more logical. But it's well known that one of the trainers in the gym, depicted as an old man, refers to Surge as his CO. So either Surge had a career soldier under his command who just could not hold onto a promotion during all that time, or Surge is quite a lot older than he looks.

The Pallet Town bit makes sense, as it's name in Japanese is Masara, which comes from masshiro, which means "pure white". Since ōkido also means oak, his ancestor's name is literally White Oak

So cool to see the Earthbound link, I did not know that one! The Final Fantasy Legend is another inspiration for the gen 1 games
  • Rhydon's early design and use as a mascot kinda reminds me of the dinosaur Digimon sprite in the V-pets. Also, it reminds me of how Tyrannomon was basically Digimon's mascot before Agumon.

I would love a full depth analysis on why Necrozma, Terapagos, and if you look at it closely, Eternatus all have some relation with crystals and their bodies resemble crystals. I’m almost convinced that when the ultimate weapon fired, it caused certain pokemon to mutate just as the evolution stones did, creating these three Crystal Legendaries

My theory on the 3rd starter in let's go is that it's Clefairy, as it was intended to be the mascot before Pikachu was decided on. Also pokemon pink is a name they've made sure to trademark. The pocket monsters manga also has red with talking Clefairy. So maybe it's Clefairy
  • The “yeti” sprite counterpart of Electabuzz and Magmar was not a new Pokémon but an early version of Jynx back sprite. You can see Jynx’ lips, Jynx’ fringe and Jynx’ hair. It is extremely similar to the official back sprite of Jynx too.

This was really good. I didn't have any expectations because I watch too many of these type of videos. This one was full of stuff I had no idea about! I will say, I believe Pallet Town was named after a paint pallet and that's why it's the starting town and the rest of the towns are named after colors.

I always thought that Pokemon Blue and Red are based on Green and Red in Japan, but now I checked it and it turns out that the only thing that Blue and Red have in common with Green and Red is the list of version exclusive Pokemon in them, but everything else is based on Japanese Blue. That's news to me. Once again amazing video.

Karen is a relative of Clair. She has taken the teaching of the Master/Elder in the Dragon's Den to heart and echoes his line regarding strong and weak Pokemon. This means she more likely has a connection to Blackthorn City.

I’d like to see videos like this for other regions

Boo was based on an Ultraman kaiju named Woo. It was revised into Jynx, the Ice Punch specialist.
  • I'd honestly wager that the Yeti is an early prototype of Jynx. Jynx is right next to Electabuzz and Magmar in the Pokedex, formed a sort of conceptual trio with them as vaguely humanoid Pokemon who (at the time) were standalone evolution-less representations of an element, and a single element each at that assuming the Yeti wouldn't have had a psychic secondary like Jynx wound up with. If so, it probably would have been better if they went with the Yeti design, since Jynx kind of got pushed into the soft retirement pit with Porygon and Kadabra for what people assumed of hers.
