For over 30 years the longest lens I owned was 300mm, then a friend made me a offer on a Nikon 200-400mm f4 lens I couldn't refuse. I started shooting bird photos in my back yard to pass the time and not long after that Nikon came out with the 500mm f5.6 PF lens and it opened up a whole new world for me with it's incredible sharpness and light weight. More recently the 800mm f6.3 S lens was introduced, making my 500mm + TC14EIII teleconverter obsolete.

I expected Nikon to make a Z-mount version of the 500mm PF, but instead they introduced the 400mm F4.5 S lens. I already owned a 300mm PF that got very little use, so I didn't know if I would like the new 400mm lens or not. After receiving the lens and using it for a day, I am very impressed and I will be selling my 500mm PF.

Thank you for the comparisons. I have the Z 400 mm f/4.5 S as well. I like its weight and distribution. I was surprised also to notice that this lens is lighter than the 70-200 mm f/2.8 S. I agree, the lack of a nice case was a bummer.

Nice video! I have the second edition of the 200-400mm f/4 mounted to a z body with a ftz-adapter. As a bird photographer I usually photograph at 400mm. In your experience, is the 400 f/4.5 sharper at 400mm than the ten year older f/4 zoom? Any differences in af speeds too, perhaps?

Thanks for the great comparison video. I've noticed the resale value of the 500mm PF in the last few months has dropped significantly . I'm sure the incredible 400mm f4.5 is responsible for that drop.

Great content! Subscribed. Only have the 200-500 f5.6. Hope to have a collection like yours one day. :)

The T stop on all those PF lenses are worse than they claim it is. 4.5 is probably really T5.6.
