Over the past weeks and months, Iran has descended into chaos. From the downing of a passenger jet to the assassination of a top general, and now one of the world's largest coronavirus outbreaks, life in the Islamic Republic is facing its toughest challenges since it was founded in 1979.

Just days before all hell broke loose, VICE founder Suroosh Alvi traveled to the country, meeting people from all walks of life: from hipsters to hostage-takers, and from top lawmakers to one of Iran's heaviest metal bands.

This is what people mean when they say they miss the “old vice”
  • Hats off to vice for listening to the people who want the old Vice format back. Hopefully more of this content and less videos about dildos
  • As an iranian, I get very picky when it comes to documentaries about my motherland. It was so relieving to finally watch something authentic. Thank you.
  • Man, that old shipbuilder broke my heart. He's clearly very attached to his project and probably down a lot of money into it as well.
  • @wolfauu
The owner of the yacht building company really got me! He seemed like a really decent man caught in the cross fire.
  • I feel like this is an actual resurgency of the old vice, lead by the person who created it.

My dad went to Iran long time ago and he loved it. I hope one day I can visit. Respect from Saudi Arabia
  • @ksc7957
"We used to drink in public and pray in private. Now we pray in public and drink in private" Damn....
  • I travelled to Iran almost exactly a year ago today. The people there are friendly, thoughtful, helpful and beautiful. I have been to many places, but there is no one like the Iranian people when it comes to hospitality. None of them hated the west, in fact most of them wanted to travel there, but most of them seemed to hate government regimes, both their own and the American one. They are the victims of politics, and they don't deserve to be. I hope one day they will be free of politicians' fight for power and influence.

Irrelevant to argue whether it's old or new Vice. It's just awesome when they make videos covering citizens abroad. It humanizes countries beyond a regime. I am in law school now and got hooked on vice int'l when I was in grade school. Videos like these have shaped my world view over the years immensely.
  • I Don't Know Why I Have Such A Strong Feeling Towards This Nation Of Iran 🇮🇷❤️
  • @talonmadc
When that yacht guy started crying I felt so bad for him
  • These guys interviewed the ex-head of an organization known for hating the US and rode a small boat into the straight of Hormuz. The absolute BALLS on these journalists, loving the new old Vice
  • "Do Iranian women have enough freedom?" Question directed to the women at the table. Male immediately : "Women have enough freedom." oh boy.
  • @kaase4879
Maybe the "Vice Reads Comments" video did in fact have an effect. This is the kind of stuff we're looking for, Vice.
  • 23:30 man the older gentleman who ran the Yacht building company broke my heart. He clearly was a guy who loves his job, business and employees. It is very easy to relate with the people on the ground. They have as much control as we do when it comes to government making bad decisions. We need more people who are not bad actors and willing to actually make the world a better place.
  • Suroosh is a straight up legend at this point .. I’m rewatching this and a few of the earlier vice docs during lockdown .. with quality work like this, it’s well worth a revisit ...
