  • I was 16, and had just dropped my first girlfriend off at home. To put it bluntly, I wanted her in a bad way. While driving home that summer night with the windows down, this song came on the radio. It was the first time a song read my soul. I'm almost 50, and that girlfriend is now my wife. This song takes me back to that night, with that same feeling every time I hear it.

Back in 1989, 6 PM, cruising the Arizona desert...the Moon rising on my right...the Sun setting on my left... and listening to the Boss..."Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire". I'll never forget that wonderful feeling!

What I love most about this song is the meta interplay between the music and the lyrics. Bruce sings about how he wakes up with "freight train running through the middle of my head"; in the instrumentals you can hear the rhythm of a train in motion, and when Bruce sings "Whooo-hooo, whooo-hooo" at the end, his voice is the train's whistle.
  • Bruce's masterpiece my only complaint is that this song is too damn short.

this is one of those rare songs that could easily go on the loop
  • I was in my 20’s in 1984… this song takes me back that time. I meet a guy named Woody C in Loveland, Colorado.. he would be the one who introduced me to Bruce Springsteen. Woody used to leave me notes with a few lyrics from one of his songs. My mission would be to figure out which song it came from. I kept a few of those little notes, tucked in my memory chest… one reads, “I can take you higher…” This song takes me back to that exact moment where I can feel the electricity exchanged between us that day. The best gift Woody gave me was Bruce and the deeper look at his lyrics because of all of Woody’s little notes.

Hey little girl is your daddy home Did he go away and leave you all alone I got a bad desire I'm on fire Tell me now baby is he good to you Can he do to you the things that I do I can take you higher I'm on fire Sometimes it's like someone took a knife baby Edgy and dull and cut a six-inch valley Through the middle of my skull At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet And a freight train running through the Middle of my head Only you can cool my desire I'm on fire Songwriters: Bruce Springsteen I’m on Fire lyrics © Downtown Music Publishing

The only problem with this song is that it doesn't go on forever!
