Business and institutions around the world have been been knocked offline after a major IT outage.

In the UK, Sky News is off air, while Britain’s biggest train company warned passengers to expect disruption because of “widespread IT issues”.

Around the world banks, supermarkets and other major institutions reported computer issues disrupting services, with some airlines warning of delays and some airports grounding flights.

Overnight, Microsoft confirmed it was investigating an issue with its services and apps, with the tech giant’s service health website warning of “service degradation” that meant users may not be able to access many of the company’s most popular services, used by millions of business and people around the world.

Dr David Bull speaks to technology expert Will Guyatt.

I am old enough to remember going in to see the Doctor (you could, in those days) and he would open his filing cabinet and pull out your “Lloyd-George” file, mark it up by hand when he had completed the appointment and then he would get out his prescription pad and write you out a prescription in very scrawly handwriting, and in Latin, on a duplicate pad. Then, you would take the prescription in to the Pharmacist and he would telephone the Doctor to ask what the prescription was (since the handwriting was illegible) and the Doctor would look at the duplicate in his book and let the Pharmacist know what it was. It was quite a fail safe system. No chance of anyone stealing a prescription pad and writing out fake prescriptions.

  • Microsoft insisted/threatened I change my beautiful Outlook that was working just fine and notified me when emails were incoming and has now taken me back to the dark ages. Want my Outlook that came with my new laptop back. If anyone can help would be very much appreciated, all attempts to switch back have now been removed.
  • “We Are SO Reliant On Computers And Tech” how can I get a job stating the obvious?

It's not reliance on computers per see. It's reliance on Windows that is the problem.

It's a good thing we have someone in the White House who is awake and aware of himself and is perfectly coherent...

Could not order medicine at the pharmacy today. What a joke! What's that old saying? Don't put all your eggs in one basket!

The code involved in these things is incredibly complex and although it'll be extensively tested, all it takes is one scenario that was missed from the tests and it all goes bad. We want more and more complex tech, these things will happen.

This is just a small taste of what it is going to be like when you turn over your daily operations to AI.

It isn't a Windows update or a Microsoft update - It was an update of the CrowdStrike software, which runs on Microsoft Windows!
  • Issue is with third party patch management with windows. Alao highlights that conpany should never send updates straight to production, send them smaller group first
