I finally got the balls to ask a dude who plays guitar to start a band. We're still looking for a drummer but we're trying to start practicing soon. I'm so hyped to write awful songs and perform in front of 2 random drunk dudes and have a good time. EDIT 7/25/24: I started a band and we've had one practice! It went pretty well.

Tip for bands, when you play with other bands, go out and watch the other bands. Cheer for them, go nuts for them and support them.
  • @TooLameToDie
The very first time i performed there was like 10 people in the audience. We were so fucking stoked.

Me personally, I had always wanted to be the lead singer of a rock band. I did start playing bass after my brother picked up guitar, but would always be writing lyrics and songs, mostly in the style of punk rock. Eventually my high school youth group was starting a band to play at our weekly meetings, so I joined that up, and it was a darn good time. We practiced once during the weekend, then again right before the youth group meetings, and for a bunch of high school kids playing Christian punk and ska covers, we were...probably awful. After that, me and my two buddies broke off from the youth group band to form a "real" band where we'd play our own songs. It really can be just that easy to start bands.

Point 9, about being realistic is so true. I'm good friends with the chats and the cosmic psychos (these bands in Australia are known all across the country and quite legendary in the Aussie Punk world), they toured with the guns and roses last year, just went to America but they are still struggling and couch surfing. I remember meeting them for the first time a few years back and each time, both bands said to me "Never quit your day job, you can always do what you love on the side but if you love it enough you will make time for it with your safety net in the back pocket". I've learnt a lot from these guys. I'm about to go on tour with them in 2 weeks but these words have always rung true with me and I'll continue to stick by it. Meeting the Psychos and living in Australia taught me a lot about public perception thinking they were all it was cracked up to be these big rockstars but actually going to their house, meeting the families and visually seeing it made me switch my perspective about putting expectation before reality but I admire the 30+ years of hardship to chase your dream. Love your videos Wyatt.

the thing about starting a band with your friends is very true me and a friend started a band a fair bit ago and we added one of my other friends later on drums and it sucked so bad i ended up realizing it was mainly cause i wasn't as motivated to play slower stuff and neither was the drummer like we originally planned and we ended up separating til me and my drummer friend got back together to write some faster stuff and were currently working on our second song and trying to grind on that project doing much better than the previous band and I'm excited for the future of doing a bunch of backyard gigs and playing tiny venues

10:26 I can't stress that enough. Ive been gonig to local shows for years and it always irked me when people performed on stage looking like they dont wanna be there. because i would tell old bandmates "dont just stand there! move around, bang your head, do SOMETHING. atleast act like you're having fun." but they would always get defensive & call me controlling 🙄😒 like, no, if YOU don't give a shit, the crowd won

Future headliner band member here, and i have to say I think this will help a lot on my journey. I'm starting at the very beginning and just starting to learn my first. instrument. I hope that one day following your tips, I can be apart of the next biggest hit in the metal world. Dream big and start small, but never give up on your grand vision, it can be done, the world is what you make it.
  • @vandavis000

My god, such perfect advice. Love the screw up samples. This is so encouraging
  • @SpicyDisco
To bands starting out: That guy just standing there with his arms crossed had the time of his life and will tell all his friends about it Also I know of a few small bands who barely break even on tours, its not for the for everyone and the way to the top isnt easy.
  • I always buy merch when I see bands now bc I didn't know that's really how they make money. Great video. Metalheads are the coolest ppl.

I used to be in one of those typical high school metal bands. It was fun for a bit. Here's the short backstory on how things went downhill very quickly. I was the keyboardist who didn't know how to play keyboard. My friend knew this but wanted me to join anyway. I did and then she was surprised that I didn't know keyboard. I was kicked from the band not too long after and soon after that the band fell apart because it became a clash of egos for everyone who remained. Fun times. Currently trying to put together my own mini group to play some shows and just have fun. You definitely hit the nail with this video. All your points are dead on. Don't expect much at all when starting out. Just do what you can with what you have and make the best of it. Also practice. Like a lot!

This past monday I played a show with my band, great venue, but not many people showed up (understandable, since it was on a fucking monday and the place is a bit far away from the center). Still, the organization had treated us very good, the stage is awesome, sound and light people are the best and some of our friends were there, so we went out and gave it all. We had a blast, I hit one of the guitar players by accident and made him mess up his solo and we just kept rolling. After we got down from the stage, one of the organizers came up to us and congratulated us for our performance, said they would count with us for next years edition, for wich they intend to bring at least one big headliner. So yeah, I confirm everything Wyatt said on this video.

My friend and I are gonna form a grunge band when he gets a guitar and we are still trying to find a bassist and drummer, and maybe a singer. It’s hard to find musicians in high school nowadays!
  • @boomshanker7
Great advice. Thanks so much for your content. I can't help it though but, "a lot" is two words. I know, i know.

At the starts of Junior high school, i was put in a band, even though i never asked to be in, i played the intro for do i wanna know and the next day i was in the band, we agreed to practice every week, i once didn't show up bc i ws sick, didn't practice next week because the singer didnt want to, and then we disbanded, in only 2 weeks
