A 56-year-old crossing guard, Lisa Dunn, was allegedly fired for feeding birds and squirrels near Secord Elementary School in Toronto, causing outrage in the community.

Dunn, a single mother, expressed concern about having to return to the welfare system after losing her job. Feeding wildlife is prohibited in Toronto, and Dunn claims she had previously received a warning about it.

Global's Noor Ra'fat reports on Dunn's struggles to stay financially afloat while still looking for another job and the importance of the essential service she and her fellow crossing guards provide.

Canada, my country, where people who assault others and steal get off with a slap on the hand but a woman who feeds birds and squirrels loses her job.
  • The guy in Manitoba kills 17 people, no charges. She feeds some birds and loses her job.
  • This is ridiculous let me tell you I remember my crossing guards name and I’m 62. These people are very important in children’s lives. Quit the crazy and put her back to work !!

For Pete's sake she got fired for feeding the birds. ???? Are you kidding me.??!! Jeez Canada get your heads out of your butts. What the heck is happening to the world when you can't even feed the birds.??!!

My wife and I have known Lisa for several years now. She is the best crossing guard we have ever seen. She not only looks after the kids but everyone that comes to the crosswalk. While other guards have held her position at the crosswalk at Main and Doncaster Ave, none have done the job as well as her. She is a real loss to the community. Larry and Carol Sutherland

    Soulless bureaucrats and corporations.

Firing a crossing guard on a single complaint that she was feeding birds and squirrels. FFS! Toronto don't you think you have bigger issues such as guns than to fire someone over something like this?

You loose your job if you feed the birds???

Firing crossing guards who feed the birds and car thieves caught stealing cars while out on bail after being arrested for stealing cars. What a country.

This is ridiculous….. They fire the good ones looking out for our kids, unbelievable.

It's birds. Not raccoon or cyote or bear. What's the problem?....
  • I don't get it. There is way too much bureaucracy going on. This is ridiculous. Just from feeding some birds and squirrels. It reminds me of kids wanting to climb trees, and God forbid they should do that. The city doesn't approve of that. The child might get hurt, or needing a freaking permit for a lemonade stand. Too many useless rules and regulations.

This story makes me sick to my stomach. Violent crime is up. Car theft is up. Who are we going after? Bird feeders. Now this poor lady is probably going to require welfare when she had been doing a wonderful job doing something that gave her meaning. Shame. Shame. Shame. Shame. Shame.

So let me get this straight…. Feeding birds will lose a job, running over a child after blowing a stop sign gets a slap on the wrist? Can anything make sense anymore?
  • @drtyboy
Firing a nice lady for some pretty pathetic reasons. It’s not like she was feeling children to the bears. East York better get some cops out in the parks, so they can keep a really close eye on the seniors who feed the birds and squirrels at the park too. They truly are a menace 🙄

Seriously? What does feeding birds have to do with driving kids to school? All you lawmakers should get a life.

Not much makes sense in Toronto other than if your not already there don't bother going. Disgusting law, and even more disgusting that any employer would use that as an excuse to fire somebody.
