Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.6 - Gym Leader Jasmine

Published 2024-04-09
The sixth Gym Leader is Jasmine, the Steel type specialist. As one might expect her Pokemon have high defense and a great defensive typing, but she does feature a wild card.

Her team is Starmie, Magneton, Skarmory, Scizor, Steelix and Blastoise. Blastoise has received the Steel type so it's now a Water/Steel type instead of being pure Water.

Starmie is her lead and right off the bat leading with the Fire type will leave at a disadvantage. Starmie has Surf, Psychic as STAB options and Thunderbolt for coverage. Its' last move is Recover. With a held Twistedspoon Psychic will do a great deal of damage to anything that doesn't resist it, Surf is powerful and Thunderbolt means Starmie is not walled by Water types, thankfully no Ice Beams means that Grass types should be able to come it as long as they're not weak to Psychic. If you can paralyze it, a powerful Bug move would also be a great answer here, especially Megahorn from Ariados or Heracross.

Magneton is the second Pokemon, as you would expect it's running Thunderbolt which is further boosted a held Magnet, as well as Thunder Wave. It also has Rain Dance to reduce the damage deal to it and the rest of her team from Fire moves and Hidden Power Ice so that it's not walled by Ground types. Magneton has decent bulk and a great Special Attack stat, but you should be able to easily KO it with a Ground type, unless you took chip damage prior you should be able to take one HP Ice.

Skarmory is a physical wall equipped with the Sharp Beak, giving it a powerful Sky Attack as well. It also runs Steel Wing as its' other STAB option, Toxic to badly poison you and Sandstorm to deal chip damage to your Pokemon, while all of Jasmine's Pokemon are not affected by it. After beating Falkner you should have a good idea of dealing with it, come in with a fast Fire type and knock it out with Flamethrower or Fire Blast but be wary that it may live if Rain is still active. Electric types are also a great choice.

Scizor is one of the two sweepers of her team. With a Quick Claw and Swords Dance in its' arsenal, Scizor can set up and demolish teams thanks to Quick Claw giving it a chance to go first despite the low speed stat. Strength, Steel Wing and Cut are the offensive moves it has, a good STAB combination and Rock type coverage. You want to take this thing out as quickly as possible before it's able to set up as it can destroy you with just one boost, Strength and Quick Claw means fire types which would otherwise easily knock it out are never fully safe.

Steelix is the second Pokemon with set-up. Much like Scizor it has Quick Claw to make up for the lack of speed and Curse, instead of Swords Dance. One Curse boost makes it very hard to knock it out with Physical moves on top of granting it extra attack and with Earthquake, Rock Slide and Iron Tail it can very quickly turn into a massive threat with bad RNG. Your best choice is a good special attacker, ideally a Water type that is not weak to any of its' attacks, this is also a good idea as you can the Rain Dance she may set up against her.

Blastoise is her final Pokemon and her new ace. Water/Steel is an incredible typing that only leaves it with 3 weaknesses and with its' natural bulk, especially the Special Defense stat, Blastoise will not go down easily without super effective damage. And even if you have an Electric or a Ground type alive they are not safe against Blastoise as it has both Surf (boosted by Mystic Water) and Earthquake. Ice Beam is the final offensive move, and it also has Rain Dance to boost Surf damage and reduce the damage dealt to it and most importantly her other Pokemon. A strong fighting type like Heracross, Machamp or the Hitmons is the best counter here.

Overall Jasmine has a solid team, with a powerful wild card, many resistances and no clear weaknesses that one Pokemon can exploit. She will also try and use weather to her advantage, so that's something to keep in mind. Quick Claw and stat boosting moves are also another factor to watch out for.

A solid core of Fire, Electric, Fighting and Ground is crucial to victory here.

0:06 Wish they removed the line of her saying Steel-types were only recently discovered. Some other hacks did this to be consistent with HGSS's removal of the line because in-universe it has always been around and Pokémon's lore was still in its infancy at the time.
