Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride. Together they make up the Seven Deadly Sins. But where do they come from, what are there origins?

In this video, we'll explore the origin and history of the Seven Deadly Sins ( sometimes also known as the Seven Cardinal Sins or Vices), as well as the concept of sin at large. You may be surprise to learn that they do not come from the Bible - well, not as a strict list as we now have it. They may have come from an Egyptian monk, known as Evagrius of Pontus and taken up by Pope Gregory I. But they certainly gained traction after Dante's Divine Comedy, notably Inferno and Purgatorio.

I really hope you enjoy watching this video. with another algorithm spike, things have been really stirring on the channel lately, so welcome all new subscribers. We're at 149k now, absurd! Thank you all for your kind comments :)

"Do not eat winged creatures like bats" Maybe they had a point
  • So I’m not religious, but I enjoy learning about this stuff, it’s like reading stories about Greek or Norse mythology, and it’s so cool to see the effect on culture that different stories and beliefs have!

Growing up as a Catholic, your topics truly facinate me! Don't get me wrong, I also love the other topics you cover. Not just the biblical/religious ones. Thank you for existing!

First time hearing about the Cardinal Virtues. I guess my catholic school was too focused on the seven sins

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS CHANNEL. This is what all churches should be like. Educational, in-depth, with no guilt or forcing a belief, rather just a beautiful analogy into certain themes in The Bible.

2:10 Iroh from The Last Airbender: “Pride is not the opposite of shame, but it's source. True humility is the only antidote to shame.” P.S. I think that Nikola was an expert in all of the Cardinal Virtues.

I'd like to see writers basing characters on the 7 virtues instead of the 7 deadly sins now

I think the 7 sins and 7 virtues can be summed up in 2 words: selfishness and selflessness. Be truly selfless and you will no doubt avoid committing any of the 7 deadly sins. Your videos are truly fascinating. Keep up the great work!

I'm going into a rabbit hole on your channel. I grew up Christian and let go of it when I turned 20. Learning things from a non-religious perspective just makes SO MUCH SENSE to things. Of course it's all somehow political in my opinion, but the fact that I just heard there are OPPOSITES of the deadly sins, I was mind blown. 19 years of Christianity only had me focusing on the negative parts of religion to makes sure you "stay on the right path." And because of that, it created way too much anxiety within myself that I had to let that shit go. I'm way happier at 25 only worrying about myself and family in my home. No pressure from random beings watching me. But you're very fascinating. Gonna spend my whole night watching your videos😂
  • “Don’t eat winged creatures like bats” World: I’m a just avoid that

I love the clean editing, conciseness and brevity of this video. It told me what i wanted to know straight away so thanks for that
  • Glad to have someone explaining the Catholic Church theology in a much simple way. It is usually complicated however I can't say that as we have this great informative channel

“I'm very well acquainted with the seven deadly sins I keep a busy schedule trying to fit them in I'm proud to be a glutton and I don't have time for sloth I'm greedy and I'm angry and I don't care who I cross”- Warren Zevon Great video as always!

These 7 sins are called "deadly" because they delineate the mortal realm. If you are truly free from all of them, then the heavens have no reason to burden you with mortality. That is why people with a "calling" as it used to be called, devoted their entire lives to cultivate themselves, to free their hearts and minds of any thoughts of wrath, lust, gluttony, greed, envy, pride and sloth - a lifelong endeavor. To aim for the impossible is quite a feat, but then again, people are known for achieving the impossible. Which is why saints or holy figures in both East and West are depicted with an aureola surrounding them; they've attained a space and state of being where no human sin is able to touch them.

Anime fun fact: Purgatory translate "Rengoku" in Japanese. In Demon slayer, The strongest flame breathing is 9th form: Purgatory or "Rengoku" used by the Rengoku family
