Being inside of empty video game servers always feels uncanny and depressing. Just knowing that there were once thousands of players roaming the servers just for them to be empty now is really sad.

I think you should have mentioned that cubecraft didnt just update to 1.9. They actually split their server into a 1.8 and 1.9 section. Meaning players who joined with 1.8 could play 1.8 with others while players joining newer versions would play 1.9. I think this is a really interesting approach that not any other server really tried. The 1.8 version was shut down a few years ago though due to lack of popularity.

I still play annihilation on shotbow frequently. I am friends with some past devs for the mode and know a few admins as well (myself and my clan in the game would spend our days hunting for bugs then showing them to staff, so we interacted with them a lot). The server has an interesting history, in addition to having a smaller player base now, and a generally younger demographic, the server merged their Americas, Europe, and Asia servers all onto the America one a few years ago. The result of this is that the language the players talk in chat changes depending on time of day.

I remember when I duped on jerry and harrys server, made a massive stash deep underground which would be impossible to find, then a guy (who most definetly had xray) accidentally found it, distributed in the most obvious way possible, and got us banned looolll
  • The hive and cube craft are chilling on bedrock, both are amazing as one specialises in pro pvp while the other focuses on games to play with friends, leaving both servers VERY popular and in general, good and popular experiences
  • @SemiHypercube
Really shows how much things have changed, how popular can really fade (some of these I never heard of)
  • Hold on, people are acting like the finished the video Four minutes after it was posted? That's some fast media consumption.

Ex-moderator of McPvP/McBrawl here, so thankful you talked about us! Yes this specific server formally ended, but game modes pioneered by it most surely haven't! Here's a rundown of the current state of some of them if anyone is interested: HG: Germany and Brazil kept it going, Germany lasted up to around 2020 with PvP Dojo, Brazil still has it going strong and sees thousands of unique players. CTF: had players playing daily up until the very end of McBrawl, at that point one one the developers took upon themselves to re-code it again and later open-source it. (We actually had the first test today! 2023-08-20, lots of bugs, but that's normal given it's being made from the ground up). Sabotage: never died, Brazilian community kept it going till today, the Acorn server (English speaking) is also re-doing the gamemode and should be playable in some time. KitPvP: BadBoyHalo acquired it for his server (MunchyMC), and it's still going. Headshot: some smaller servers picked it up, but there's not much demand anymore. McWar: MisterEpic actually talked about this one more as of recent, given Mojangs stance on guns, also came from our network and the current developer came from McBrawl if I'm not mistaken.

I remember playing on Jerry and Harry's server the day they launched it. Even ended up meeting them and talking a little since they were going around and checking out what people were building near spawn in those first hours. Definitely a fun memory for (what I think would be) 11 year old me at the time.

J&H was a literal nostalgia trip, pretty sad that they turned the channel to build battle 24/7 and then quit

Great video, I was a little disappointed though to see that it wasn’t mentioned how Cubecraft recently removed all of their unique and interesting gamemodes making them just another generic server with gamemodes you can play anywhere else. My personal favorite was tower defense, it was one of a kind as a both co-op and versus team based tower defense. I have yet to find any game that exists, on minecraft or otherwise, which is similar. I still don’t understand why they shut down those extra gamemodes. It couldn’t have cost them that much to keep it going if the whole server was staying up regardless.

Really shows how impressive it is for the few servers that are still up and running and has been for the last 10 years or so. Wynncraft and Hypixel are basically the only ones that survived on Java edition

McPVP was my go-to server back in the day. I would come home from school and play on the CTF and Hardcore Games for hours on end. It was integral to my daily routine and helped me mentally decompress. I quit playing Minecraft around 2014, but whenever I came back a few years later I expected to see it still standing, because it was so immensely popular. I was disappointed to find it dead and gone by that point. However, I still have my memories of it. I can also say that many maps from the CTF are absolutely ingrained in my mind nearly a decade later lol.

I played Hive Java all the way back in 2013 and played it up until it closed. Super fond memories. I remember back when Survival Games, The Herobrine, and TIMV were the only three gamemodes. I loved the Herobrine game to death and played it religiously in the server's first couple years. When the server announced that the gamemode would be removed after the rewrite update (Java 2), I remember many of the veteran players coming back one last time and we sat in the old maps talking about how much we had fun with the game. I also remember telling them about how I loved seeing all the regular players back in the day and I was too shy to ever say anything. In any case, the game was removed and we never played it again. Also shoutout to the other five players aside from me who dedicated time to grind the literal least popular gamemode, Restaurant Rush. I started playing it ironically until I ended up liking it a ton and ended up getting to the Top 10. You all were so sweet ^^

Overcast Community is one of the three servers that I am playing on. I really love the gamemodes and the players cause (almost) everyone is involved to try to get the win for their team. I joined in a year and a half ago and I didn't knew his story at all. I'm so, so glad that this server has been revived. It is really a top tier minecraft server!

I've been an active player in the shotbow community since 2013 and I can tell all the things you said in this video are accurate, and I appreciate the fact that you mention that the server still has a dedicated playerbase. Shotbow also has a big part of the staff team really hoping to make the gamemodes attractive again for a new player base in the future in order to advertise the server and bring a lot of new players. We don't know if it will actually work one day tho, but atleast this server has dedicated players hoping for a bright future !
  • Shotbow started off as minez to my knowledge and became the first hub server when annihilation was announced. Many game modes on shotbow have been lost to time such has wasted, minez 2, minez with guns, ghostcraft, mine theft auto (the best gta clone in Minecraft) and many more newer game modes have all be scrapped. Shotbow hopefully will get the attention it deserves and maybe bring back some of these lost game modes.
  • @mxcascade
I loved Shotbow a bunch as a kid. So many amazing gamemodes especially their spin on The Hidden sourcemod with Ghostcraft was so much fun
  • @UltimateGamez
I have a rank on Cubecraft (Which you cannot buy anymore and lost most of its value), and it hurts to see that they are really struggling right now. My favorite game modes were tower defense and mini games, which were removed last September. It’s actually interesting to see how it is surviving on the Java side, since it has only few store purchases available.
