WATCH TILL THE END.

Shawn was getting an inside scoop in Tony's EDC when he shares this INTENSE combat story.

This has to be one of the most intense close-quarters, hand-to-hand gunfights in a war zone. After being held at gunpoint, Tony Cowden meets the enemy with resistance using his own firearm, and they begin to engage in a ground gunfight. When his pistol went out of battery, he fixed the malfunction on the enemy's back and finished them off.

To his tourniquet comment, Tony's 100% right. I'm a Sheriff's Deputy and had an incident involving a guy that was in a rollover wreck that severed his arm at the elbow because he had it resting out the window. A trucker got a belt on the arm before I got on scene. I arrived on scene 3 minutes after the 911 call, grabbed my bag, ripped my tourniquet out and put it on higher than the belt and applied pressure on the nub with my hand and some celox gauze. That trucker saved the driver's life with that belt, even though it wasn't stopping the bleeding completely. I was kneeling in 2 pints of his blood while treating him. The trucker gave him enough time to get me there and then I gave him enough time for EMS to get there and do their thing. An improvised tourniquet does a lot more than people make it out to.

There is trained, there is experienced, and then there is this man. Between his presence, voice, and skill to tell a story, I could listen to an entire series of his experiences. One of my favorite guests to date. I never thought someone would rival DJ.

His point about networking so even a city boy with no real skills can at least have a few country boy buddies is spot on. His neighbor being a farmer/rancher and him being the security makes perfect sense. We don't have to learn everything! Just bring a skill and make friends!
  • "if Bear Spray is good for Brown Bears, it has to be good for shit heads"- Best quote I've heard in a good bit

One of the most intense stories you’ve heard in an EDC? Yes No 👇🏼 👇🏼

I remember during my 3rd deployment with the 82nd 1st/504th to OIF I noticed that when we had an SF ODA, or part of a JSOC task force or even an element of SAD shooters come through one of our combat outposts that you immediately recognized these were dangerous and determined men. It sounds cliche but I can honestly say some of the most humble, reserved guys I met during my 8 years in were dudes like this that I hold in the highest esteem. They don’t need to tell you how tough they are, if you have a pulse and basic threat assessment skills you are already well aware.

This guy is wild. Never heard someone tell stories like this so calmly
  • @INdifrnve
So great how honest he is and nothing even near braggadocios whatsoever. He not only admits that he has weaknesses (as a human being , like all of us) but he plans for real eventualities. Awesome.

To have the situational awareness in a moment like that to rack a pistol on someone's back after the malfunction while you're fighting for your life with bullets coming at you while you're holding a bad guy with one arm and then NIGHT NIGHT!! TWO TIMES!!! .. HOLY SHIT!! That's badass 😮😮😮

I appreciate him bringing up bear spray. I dont think enough people really even try to go non lethal anymore. Straight to the strap…
  • Shawn, this dude is just on another level. I was in the Army 11 years and met a alot of stellar guys that knew their shit. This guys stories are amazing.

  • @HigherStandardsKY
Monday is now my favorite day of the week because I get to listen to the new episode. But 3 hours later the rest of the week is shit because I’m just starving for more Shawn Ryan. It’s all I listen to while working. Now I’ve watched every episode so I’m going back through and listening

I heard Tony tell the hotel story three years ago while shooting with him. It has not changed one bit. Legend.

Love the show!!! Uncle was in the navy, was in Falluja and in Afghanistan he unfortunately took his own life about 5 years ago, so your podcast and what you’re doing really helps bring a lot of peace and realization of what he went through and his trauma. He was a Navy cores-man . They called him Doc. His government name was Ernest William Henderson if you or anyone watching this ever came across him m during your service

I grew up like Tony did. Not only did my Dad who owned a farm but was a full-time Bible Thumper have my 2 younger brothers and me run the farm by just telling me to figure things out, but also my grandfather who was a (full-time cop - part-time whisky runner, and WW 2 combat vet teach me things that most kids probably didn't need or should know LOL but I also had an ex Vietnam vet who was a LARP live with us until the year before I joined the military and he taught me beaucoup tricks and hacks that even to this day I couldn't forget if I tried. Those 3 men's influence on me made it considerably easier for me to become a member of the 75th Ranger Battalion back in the '80s I just bought an old Southern-style Farmhouse in rural Louisiana after spending 35 years hunting fugitives across the nation and I have totally renovated it by myself with the help of 3 Hispanic men and had to buy all kinds of hi-tech tools and equipment that I didn't know how to use, but I now have a masters degree in home renovations from the university of YouTube.

I am a retired Deputy Sheriff with 20 years of SWAT, 15 years EOD, Worked u/c etc. I picked up a court security gig after I retired. The prior security director had purchased bear spray for the court staff and probation officers. When I started checking the shelf life and also wanting to get the latest and greatest, I did a little research and learned that the term "bear spray" doesn't mean it's proportionately more potent. Infact, the oleoresin capsicum by volume is less than half the potency of what is offered for personal defense, in some cases. Shawn, let Tony know about this. It pays to read the label, sometimes, haha. I made a few calls and was told that the bears olfactory has way more receptors so it doesn't take as much of the pepper to accomplish the needed results. I did, however, like the quart size containers!
  • Shawn Thank you very much I’ve been watching these episodes when I can ever since I first found them on my big screen TV and every part of these interviews with Tony Cowden are just perfect in every way sound, editing, quality is just perfect. His tails are great and pure awesomeness. Thanks again for having him on, his wisdom is invaluable and I just like him I don’t have a bug out bag for the same reason, why leave behind a lot of your best defenses to go out somewhere else where the natives don’t want you. All though I do carry an away bag, ammo, tools, food, water, med supplies, guns and so on. But I need to get some bear spray because that is excellent advice.
